Can someone tell me about the Canon 100MM f2.8 Macro 1:1 lens. This is the non USM one.

I would like to know the quality, what it is worth and how it compares to the USM model.

Thank you.

I got a used one about a month ago and it's been great. For macro work the non USM factor hasn't been all that important. I've turned it off during a lot of the last macro shoot that I did.

If you are looking at this lens as a more general use item you might be better off with the faster AF response of the USM.

I don't think that Canon makes a non USM 100 Macro lens. Perhaps you are thinking along the lines of fattizzi where you can turn the autofocus off.

I bought the 100 F2.8 USM Macro lens and love it. I find it better than the 50mm as when doing macro with lens I found I was too close to the subject and sometime the camera threw a shadow I didn't like. I haven't done alot of macro work with but the ones I have, the results were pleasing to me.

The (now superceded) EF100 macro Has a few distinct traits.
It sometimes gives trouble with the focus drive,it's abit long compared to the newer USM version when at macro distance(still similar working distance though),focus is slooooow from one end to the other but very good for normal distances, the front of it is effectively a built in hood but if light DOES manage to get to the front element it does have above average flare for a non zoom .
Now the great stuff- it is one of the most unbelievably good lenses optically i've used or even heard of!!extremely sharp, perfect colour and contrast, fantastic detail. You will NOT be disapointed in it's optical performance.
By all accounts i've read, the USM version is as good or better optically and better in every other respect

....oh,and they're worth about us$350 upwards last time i looked
