I need some help with CF card directories created by 10D. Back in July I went to an airshow and all of a sudden I began getting Error99 codes. Sometimes after 20 shots and sometimes after a few and thought something was wrong with my camera. I was using a microdrive and had over 6000 shots without an error so I assumed this was a new development. I suspected it was writing errors and since I had just ordered a new CF card I would wait for it to arrive and run some tests. Well I got the new card and everything was fine till yesterday. Thats when it HIT ME more error99 codes. I couldn't figure out what I was doing different, you have to realize I probably shoot a hundred shots a day without any errors.
The only thing different was I was using a Digibin to store and erase. When I got home I copied the remaining shots to my digibin and then when I began transferring the images to the computer I noticed something. In the first set or download the normal directories..ie numbered directories were there with the additional CANONMSC directory containing the D.CTG and also numerical control file. The second set when the errors began was missing this directory. It was then I realized I used it at the airshow as well but normal daily use I just use a CF card reader and transfer the image directories off without removing what I call the "Control Directory" CANONMSC. I reformat the card in the camera and the control directory is missing. Bottom line is when I use the erase card function of the digibin it deletes everything, and even though I reformat using the camera they don't show back up?????
I manually created the directory back on the CF and put the D.CTG back on. My question to anyone is for more information about how the camera uses this D.CTG file and shouldn't reformatting the card put it back? I haven't discovered a way to selectively delete using the digibin but I guess until I find an answer I can just delete all images using the camera instead.

Why do you need to delete any images at all?

After you have done the file transfer from CF card to portable storage, then just put the sucker back into the camera and do a fresh format.
