I'm still trying to decide if the lack of mirror lock up is going to affect my photography or not. I do use a lot of different shutter speeds, so some of my shots are in the range where mirror lock up would help.

In all the Digital Rebel/300D example pictures I've seen lack of mirror lock up hasn't seemed to be a problem, but maybe they just aren't using the right shutter speed.

Does anyone have two pictures that show a clear difference between using mirror lock up and not using it?

Back in June I did a test using the 70-200 + the extender EF 2x II to see for myself how IS and Mirror-Lock-Up affected my picture taking. I made a series of exposures and selected the best to make the following composite. Since doing this test, I turn IS off when using a tripod and use mirror lock-up (MLU) when possible.

When using a mono-pod or similar support I leave IS on.

I used the 2x extender to help amplify any movement.

Tripod, RS-80N3 and window light.
Shutter speed: 0.5 sec
Aperture: 11
Exposure mode: Av
Flash: Off
Metering mode: Evaluative
Drive mode: Continuous: frame 1
ISO: 400
Lens: 140.0 to 400.0 mm
Focal length: 400.0mm
Subject distance: 5.29 m

Paul, Thanks for posting the results of your tests. They show the advantages of MLU and IS-OFF in a very unambiguous way.

I'd like to add that on a purely subjective and non-scientific basis I've come to use MLU and IS-OFF whenever I use a tripod. Except when I forget. I think Canon should design their SLR systems so they will screech, loudly, "TURN OFF THE IS, STUPID!" whenever an idiot like me shoots from a tripod with IS-ON.
