I posted this elseware and a suggestion was made to post it here. I guess that would make a lot of sense. Wow what a wealth of information. Thanks to all. I just got my Rebel XT 2 weeks ago. Would someone comment on my first attempt at dof actually using Aperture Priority AE. Focus was on the one flower, but the highlights blew on the white ones to the right. What could I have done differently? Thanks in advance and looking forward to much more of this great information.

Sometimes you have to re-compose the shot or take a completely different vantage point to get the surroundings and background that you want - that might be the best solution for the distracting, blown out highlights of the neighboring blossom.

The Petunia seems to be sharp and properly focused, but that is not possible to determine accurately with an image that has been downsampled to only 500x333 pixels. Only a gross impression of sharpness, sharpness of focus and depth of field are possible with this size image.

However, it is a pleasing image with good composition and does appear to be sharp.

Thank you Robert, I can't believe how much I have to learn.
I guess I thought I had to resize the photo for uploading to the web. Would there be a better way to do this as I would like my future photos critiqued.
Can you tell I really am a newbie. LOL

Yes, you should re-size and stay within reasonable file sizes in order to link to this forum. However, when you want a critical review of sharpness, the only way we can evaluate sharpness is from a Full Detail 100% Crop.

A suggested tool for re-sizing, and Recommended reading on how to create 100% Crop:

The Microsoft Image Resizer
can be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

After downloading, install it. It will not show up in your Start->Programs list, but will become available when you right click on an image file.

After right clicking on the file, look for an item in the menu that pops up called "Resize Pictures".
Select "Resize Pictures" from the pop up menu and then select the "Medium" size, which will be limited to 800 x 600 pixels and will be of good quality.
The EXIF data that is embedded in your image file will be preserved (unless it has already been removed by some other processing).
