View Full Version : Dropped 30D (2 Weeks Old)

 On the weekend a friend of mine was out shooting with his new 30D and asked an innocent bystander to take a photograph of him and his girlfriend, upon handing the camera back, the 30D owner fumbled the pass and dropped the 2 week old camera:cry:
Upon picking it up the 50mm 1.8 was smashed to pieces (cheapest lens in the bag....Luckily) And the camera sustained only minimal damage to the cover in which the flash folds into, Essentially the Canon logo is broken off the front and the flash mechanism is a little bit sticky!
Just wondering if anyone knows if Canon (Aust) help with a non warranty repair or if spares are even availiable yet?
Thanks again
ASH

OUch! That sound of a camera hitting the ground is one you'll not soon forget. Luckily, I've never damaged any gear by dropping it, but its always possible, which is one reason that I insure my gear w/ a personal articles policy.
I'm not sure what you mean by "spares," but I'm sure that Canon Aus. will be able to help with non-warranty work.

agreed, insurrance is a must when you spend so much money on equipment. i have about a $3k policy which is $50 each year. worth it to me :) as for the repair, write canon and see what they have to say.

Why would it be a "non warranty" repair if it's 2 weeks old? Am I stupid, or can I just not read?

Warrantees do not cover accidental damage. They cover manufacturer defects. I am surprised you do not know that.
Insurance covers accidents.

it's covered if you drop it??? i've never looked at the warranty, but i doubt it.

ahahaha...I did'nt even think about it. Derrrrr.
You wanna know something really funny? I've never registered for a single warranty in my life. Maybe I'm lucky? Probably just stupid, as you've all seen. :-D

You are never required to register to "activate" or "validate" a warranty. That's against the law in the U.S.

I mean I've never filled out warranty cards or anything. You know what I mean. Gives you an idea as to my experience with warranties, huh?

A warranty wont cover accidental damage, they normally only cover defects or faults in the materials/parts used or in the workmanship. They never cover over use/abuse/missuse/accidents or user errors.
To the OP, ask your friend to check with their home contents insurance provider as they may cover goods temporarily removed. Some contents policies give cover like this even for accidental damage. I personally make certain all my gear is covered before I even play with it.

Ouch that hurts. I think I'll always keep my hands on my gear. It's good to hear these stories so we all learn in the long run.

i'm actually okay with other folks handling my camera.. as soon as I see the strap around that person's neck and they don't get it out of my camera bag or try to change lenses, or change settings or move more than five feet away from me.. or..... no really, I am easy going about folks touching my gear...

No one has ever held my camera but me, save one time. My sister took it out of the Kata...I ripped it out of her hands (she breaks everything) and made darn sure everyone knew that nothing having to do with my camera was ever to be touched. I can't afford two, and neither can they, so it's best I should be responsible, should anything happen.

I've let others hold my camera, but the neck strap goes on first before they get to touch it. I won't even let myself use the camera without the neckstrap. I hope I never have to watch my stuff hit the ground. That would be a sad day :(

Superficial damage is not worth repairing - besides why would you - you looks soooooo professional with a scuffed camera!!! And it's a brand new camera too - so you must be - like - some really good pro photographer!!!
Treat it like a battle scar...it's an ego thing.
Help him out - rub his lenses with some sandpaper too!

That is bad advice, most respectfully. I dropped my camera and without knowing it, it turned out the focus points were out of alignment. I would not have known that had I not brought it in for repair. The top was cracked also.
Cost me $500 for repair, FYI.

...if you couldn't tell any difference (without taking it in for repair), then are you sure it was worth $500? ;)

at that price, might as well get a new camera. it's a 30d right? 1ds are indestructible save for nuclear detonation at the epicentre. ;)
