View Full Version : Typical events to expect announcements

I'm on the fence about buying a 10D, and I also have a bad tendency to buy something a day before a new version is announced.

I'm wondering what shows, events, etc there are where new products are generally announced. I'm too new to all of this to know what trade shows or whatever to keep an eye out for.

Assuming that there IS a new product to announce. With the popularity of the 10D and the new Rebel announcement, Canon might have enough revenue coming up to do nothing.

Any advice here? Should I just jump in, or wait?

There's always something new just around the corner in the electronics/computer industry and especially digital photography.

It's a personal decision for sure, but what we're buying now for $1500 will probably be sold, and be a better product, for less than $500 in two-three years. Remember, it wasn't all that long ago where a MUCH lesser quality dSLR sold for $20K.

It's always been that way. So, you take off your shoes and step on in, or watch all of us having fun, and yes, spending money.

My first dSLR was the D60 and six months later I bought the 10D for $550 less than what I paid for the D60.

Some people got all bent out of shape when they came out with the 10D. Geeze, you'd thought Canon killed their first-born child, but I just bought the new model and use the D60 as a backup. Actually my wife uses the D60 on a regular basis.

So, if when a company releases a new product your hands get cold and clammy, and your sleep suffers, I'd pass on a dSLR for the next 2-3 years. But, if you want to get a new jolt into the world of photography, come on down!

I've been shooting for 30-plus years and these new Canons totally revived my hobby and now I'm on the verge of at least going semi-pro.

I have never been more excited about photography now than I have in the past 15 years.

In fact, let me do this: Thank you Canon.

There...Now go do the right thing. ;)

I know for sure earlier this year (Feb.) the 10D was announced @ the PMA here in Las Vegas it is a major show for the Photo industry. Also The wedding photographers show has some new itmes or previews in January. Opps one more the CES consumer Electronics show in early Jan. All here in Las Vegas, I'm sure they're other places but these are the ones that really brings in people so alot of previews are out.

I heartily agree. I was seriously into photography through junior high and high school, and then into my early 20's. But then just kinda lost that drive to capture the light. I still shot from time to time and everywhere I'd go I'd look around for the shot, but nothing has inspired me like the DSLR's.

I looked at the D30's with near salivation but couldn't swing the $3000 (knowing the glass investment I'd have to make as well), then the D60's at $2100, and then when I saw the 10D at $1499 (and less), that was it for me. I'll probably buy the next generation improvement and use the 10D as backup, and on down the time line.

Technology drops in price. It's going to happen. Something bigger, faster, better is going to come along. You can only sit on the board for so long before you have to either jump on a wave or miss all the fun.

Good luck with the night sweats.. heh

Never a truer word was spoken! You can always wait for the next one, but by the time the next one is released, the r&d department will be thinking about the next one and so on. I personally used 6MP as a decision point to buy a DSLR, and am I glad I did. My interest and enthusiasm for photography has been rekindled by the 10D and instead of boring people to death with slide shows, I'm now printing and displaying my photographs and even selling a few.

Jump in now. You won't regret it.

My 2p's worth

I read on http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB8 that Canon has no plans in the near future to replace the 10D, courtesy of Chuck Westphall of Canon, USA.

And I believe that too Scott. The 10D is one of the best rated and respected cameras in the world today. If it ain't broke...

I have owned two D30's a D60 and I still have a 1D and a 10D. I don't regret it I loved all of the cameras and I will keep on shooting. I have gor grat shots with every digital that I own and some terrible bloopers too. I have learned a lot along the way if you don't jump in you can't get wet. Man I must be drenched so welcome and have fun
