you know, the people from the US might think that a "fag" is an offensive term for homosexuals - it might confuse some of them...

I totally agree. It seems like we Americans are offended by nearly everything these days.

why do we seem to think that we need to care about whether we are being offensive or not--if we adjusted our selves to suit everyone then we remove ourselves from any individuality--we don't need to be deliberately offensive, likewise, people need to not be so vain and think that everything they hear is not only meant to be offensive, but directed towards them!!

Harmony exists precisely because we can get along in spite of all of our differences, and when we recognize our differences, and that they certainly do exist, we begin to understand that we are not all that different.

If we all practiced tolerance ... this world would be a better place. Our freedoms are judged not by what we allow, but by what we tolerate.

Just like the word 'Gay' no longer refer to the state of happiness. :(

sure it does--any dictionary will tell you that--it should NOT be your fault for using a word and people either don't know what it means, or think it means something different, or that they cannot differentiate from the different meanings of the word under the specific context.

Have you ever looked up the word "up" in a dictionary? I suggest you do, then think about all of the times that you use the word, and how many times do you have to specifically inform your audience which definition of the word you are using--never, probably--and yet most people are able to follow along--this leads me to consider the fact that people are capable of following along the defintion of the word 'gay' when used in any context, yet the chose to 'act' offended when in is conducive for them to take a stand-for what ever reason, in what ever context--people are too inconsistant these days--again, when we begin to adjust ourselves because of others, we begin to lose our sense of individuality

and just to bring it back...our individuality is what enables all of us to have a camera in our hand and essentially not repeat each other--we can shoot the same thing and get different results--

sometimes we see pictures that are offensive, right--well, just cause the are doesn't mean that we can't learn something from them--learning is an offensive process--takes us out of our comfort zone--be we all know, as in photography, when we stretch our knowledge and skills, it is tough at first but we manage to get better--this would be that tolerance aspect.

I disagree. Toleration is no better than racism or discrimination. Toleration just ignores others who are different than you and disincludes them. No one should need to tolerate anyone...the answer lies in cooperation and tearing down boundaries. If you are solely tolerating someone you are consciously considering that they are different than you or that you are some how superior and you need only tolerate them. I would use the word tolerate in context such as I can tolerate the screeching my brakes make, but one should not use it for describing human beings.

Wrong. Tolaeration is not ignoring ... that is called ignoring. Tolerance is recognizing that someone is different ... and saying that you respect their right to be different. There are many people with different ideas and practices which are so extreme to mine that I would rather not befriend or cooperate ... but I still believe that they have the right to their opinions and ways and to express said opinions and ways. As such, I am treating them as an equal and with respect ... still doesn't mean I have to like them. You are totally wrong when you state that consciously considerating someone as different equates to you feeling superior to that person. Consciously considerating someone as different means that you are consciously considerating someone as different. If this is how you think ... stretching to conclusions which have little relationship to the actual facts ... I think that if we ever met I would have to exercise extreme tolerance.

Exams - ew. No envy from me on that front.

Let us know when you tackle the smoke - I'm quite interested to see how you do. Never tried it myself, but am intrigued. My present mini-fascination is with matches, but I haven't even gotten to the fire bit yet.

But do you tolerate the hijacking of your thread? Does it offend you? Do you just ignore it?
