I own Speedlite 420EX and I need it for flash macro photography. Currently I can't afford ring macro flash or ST-E2 transmitter. Is Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 suitable for macro and is it worth $50? Listed cord length is 2 ft - can it extend more (it is a spiral cord), maybe for use on light stand for portrait photography?

Worth $50? Probably. I got one because I had to for my bracket. 2 ft. yes it stinks. It's a phone cord type and it can stretch, but not very far. And I do use the transmitter because the cord is too short for my use. Sorry about that. Maybe someone else has used it on a stand off camera, but I have never been able to do it effectively.

It's pricey for sure, but what are your options? If you are going to get the flash off the camera you need to trip it some way. There is a thread here from a while back on making your own off shoe cord but I believe even that one starts with a Canon cord.

I just measured mine. It is a coiled cord and will go to 3 feet if stretched to about its max.

Three feet is plenty for me. If I needed more while retaining ETTL, my options are an ST-E2 or a 580EX - both more than $50. I'm actually impressed with how durable it is, especially when you attach this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=92403&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) to the remote shoe end.

if you want to shoot in ettl, then yes. if you shoot in M, then no. You could just hook a sync cord into it with an adapter for much less.

Thanks for the replies! I will probably buy it  . If it proves to be too short, adaptation doesn't look too complicated.
