Help shooting at a party

I have been asked to shoot a party that will be outside. 90% of the people are black and the dress code is "all white". If I use a gray card to set the exposure will this give me the best results?

The best exposure will be to shoot a few test photos and watch the histogram, drop to manual with some best guess settings, do a couple of exposures watching the histogram, then stay in that mode. Check your histogram regularly.
