Check the exif info.
The cheetah shot at least was indeed shot at 200 mm but not with the 70-200mm F/2.8 NON-IS L lens which this thread is about. It was shot with the f4 version of the lens.

I find myself getting frustrated with this lens. I've only had it for about a month, and I've only taken it out shooting maybe 5 or 6 times, but I've had very mixed results.
I've had some pictures that I'm very very happy with, but I also have had 2 occassions where I wasn't happy with anything I shot, everything seemed soft or OOF.
I know this lens will test my handholding abilities and force me to get better, but I get frustrated, sometimes wishing I had opted for the IS version.
I try to follow the "rules", keeping my shutter speeds at 1/320 to 1/500 minimum. I've also been paying more attention to my handholding techniques, but still, I've had very mixed results.
Here are a few of the really good results I've had this week:
1) ISO 200, 1/400, F/2.8, 200mm
http://photos.kodanja.net/img/v1/p781056251-3.jpg
2) ISO 200, 1/400, F/2.8, 200mm
http://photos.kodanja.net/img/v1/p972047717-3.jpg
3) ISO 400, 1/200, F/2.8, 75mm
http://photos.kodanja.net/img/v1/p568101843-3.jpg
4) ISO 400, 1/320, F/2.8, 140mm
http://photos.kodanja.net/img/v1/p789152587-3.jpg
5) ISO 400, 1/400, F/2.8, 200mm

These are without a TC. Most of my shots from this games after cropping are about 2-3mps, hence the want for more FL.
Although I'm pretty sure I could get decent 8x10s from these if not looked at really close.
Thanks for the comments.

I do in the sense I really feel the need for it and wish it was there, but I do not regret it as because of the cost it was never an option.
It depends how you use it, but the problem, for me anyway, is that it is so heavy that you need a really fast shutter speed to be able to hand hold it. But if you can use a monopod then that makes a huge difference.
The quality is fantastic though.
As is being able to shoot wide open at f/2.8 to get narrow depth of field and being able to cheaply add a convertor to turn it into a 400/5.6. If those appeal to you then will absolutely love this lens.
I certainly have no regrets getting the f/2.8 over the f/4 IS.
Michael.

cool, thanks michael. I just recently returned my 200 f2.8L so i can pick up the 70-200 2.8 instead. not having the zoom was hurting me a bit. I got used the the weight of that lens and camera shake wasnt a huge deal even at 200mm so hopefully with the zoom i wont be out at 200 all the time and can get around shelling out for the IS

Some of these images are personal; just ask for respect if going to comment towards any.
Thanks ;).
These shots are of my Uncle, who recently passed from a random out of nowhere stroke.
He is a Vietnam Vet that flew medical helicopters as apart of the Ghost Riders. He would retrieve the wounded from the battlefield and deliver them to the hospital. There was a 21 gun salute next to my grandpa's burial site (his dad and a WW2 vet) and was buried next to my grandpa. I just wish I would of had the chance to capture my grandpa's 21 gun salute too; it was much more intense as all of our family was able to intend that one. I was very nervous to do a shoot like this, but after it was all done i was very happy and so is the rest of the family! I suggest anyone that has a chance to do something like this do it (i don't advertise as a funeral shooter, I just go from anyone that asks me). However remember you are there as a photographer to document the event, not shape it.

Correcting the WB on which ones?
I've processed them all to how i want the feeling of the shot to be.
Most of them are desaturated to convey a sort of sombering feeling; I hope.
This is not all the shots, as I still have quite a bit to upload.
*I added some background information to the images for anyone wanting to know about it ;)

Correcting the WB on which ones?
The 2nd one. Look at the white stripes and compare it to the third one. If you shot raw. You can fix it with the eyedropper. I attended the burial of a WW2 vet ( the father of a VERY close friend of mine). It is a mesmerizing experience...it puts a LOT of things in perspective and you re-learn the meaning of the words: Respect, grateful and valor. I always thank vets and active duty military personnel. I have worked with SEALS, Special-OPS and NSA. I tell them my story and why I am so greatful to them.

Oh yah i know. It's been cross processed that's why it has that tint to it. ;)
I completely agree with the 2nd statement as well. I think we all know someone that has been in a war or is one now a days and it's sad that they are put through it.

Hello,
Please forgive me if I am hijacking someone's thread and just ignore this post.
When I began in photography years ago I bought a Canon A1 and a 200mm Macro lens. That was a very good combination and I very much regret selling that lens.
I migrated to Nikon after reading John Shaw's Closeups In Nature because I wanted to use the same equipment setups he used for his remarkable closeup photography. I have found that his suggestion of using the old Nikon 80-200 f2.8 zoom with diopters. The closest focusing distance with the lens alon is 38.5" alowing 1/4X at 200mm, with +1.5 diopter the closest focusing distance is 15" inches and 3/5X magnification at 200mm.
I have now decided to go home to Canon because I was never quite satisfied with the Nikon equipment or the results of my efforts with it. Moreover, I wish to go digital and my eyesight isn't what it used to be so automatic focusing may be helpful at times if not for closeup work.
Have any of you done any experimentation with diopters and closeup photography with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L? If so, I would be very interested in reading what you learned about it.
Cheers,
Kelpie

Oh yes I do post process my shots, but many need very little work at all. Its wether I choose to do it or not.. I have also used the IS version of this lens and it is a beautiful lens as well. I find little difference if any between the two IQ wise. If I was doing a lot of low light shots Id invest in the IS but as I don’t I’m happy with the non IS model

Well, I bit the bullet.
I haven't even received my 5DII yet, you know, since there not... well... shipping or anything.
The local shop had a used model (well used) for $550 including a semi-hard padded case. I invited a friend to check it out and he confirmed that it's in fine shape. I couldn't pass it up, since better-condition copies here are going for $800+, and in this case I was able to do the transaction in person with a 30-day return policy.
So as soon as the MkII's start shipping, I'll have that shot to post up (unless my friend lets me borrow a body first.)
Thanks to everyone in this thread and on this forum for the incredible insight - I really can't wait to put the new camera through its paces.

no regrets not having IS.
word of caution: be careful as f/2.8 is really quite a shallow DOF for such a long lens. it takes some getting used to. but the results are wonderful when you get it right.

Well, I wasn't quite sure what the location would be like. I wanted to tame the clear blue sky a little if it came to me shooting players at certain angles, and I was interested in getting a little extra overall saturation pop. It was a very bright day, and I wanted to shoot fairly wide open (f/4 with the TC), and the CPL didn't really create issues. I had plenty of latitude with ISO adjustment if I needed really fast shutter speeds (the one above was 1/640th, which was plenty fast).
