Here are a few I took this weekend in my friends backyard while visiting Austin, TX.

They were all handheld, so they aren't nearly as sharp as I would like, but none the less:

Question: Does the IS REALLY warrant the extra cost?

I got the 70-200 lens with my first Canon camera couple years ago, when I had to switch from another system.
For a long time this lens was not used very often, first, because there is no place in my bag, second, I found it waaaay too long. I took it with me only when I knew I had to shoot sports or something like this.

But a month ago I got my FF camera and I am absolutely stunned with the image quality this lens delivers.

The focal distance 70-200 makes it perfect for single portrait shoot out. This the one I took few days ago:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2608/4010951494_f6965c1c75.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gbaturin/4010951494/)
Camera: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II
Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 130 mm
Exposure: +1.05
ISO Speed: 125
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

I'd like to carry it with me all the time.

And this is my first question in this thread: how do you carry it? in the bag? Original lens case? Third party lens case?

Thanks!

I think it's the top choice because it's versatile, and herd mentality. If you shoot sports, you need shutter speed. The IS won't help you with that. But, the IS is killer to try and help with portrait, landscape, and non moving stuff. If you have the money, you likely can't go wrong. Don't do it because it's the popular choice. There are happy owners of this lens at a considerable savings. You could go sigma and get a quality lens at a further savings, and could have plenty of money to add the likes of a 85 1.8 or 100 2 or 135 2.

Would this len make a better portrait len then the f/4? Deciding between the two right now

I've always heard that the f/4 version was just a little sharper and had better colors and contrast or whatever, but I personally don't see how after using this uber-sweet lens for some time now. And to me, the larger f/2.8 aperture better suits portraiture for blurring out the background. The best-known portrait lens on earth is the 85 f/1.2L, so that right there should tell you something about larger apertures, focal length, and portraits.

tronvex
19th of January 2010 (Tue), 15:13
Oh yes, the 85mm f/1.2L is a VERY good len for portraits and plan on getting one. But for right I would like something with a reach and debating between the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/4. I'm leaning toward the f/2.8 right now, but also I would to get the IS verision since I won't be carrying a tripod with me most of the time. It still up in the air right, and I got till summer to make my decision

Loving mine still. Anyone got any experiences to share about rain and this lens? It's not "weather sealed" according to everything Canon say but I don't quite believe that it isn't.

Well, it's definitely not weather sealed. Not much to believe or not. When you mount it, you can see the silver of the mount between the lens and the camera body. If it were sealed, there would be black rubber there to complete the seal

Ah, I see now. I just compared with my 24-70 and 70-200. Quite obvious now that I know the difference but before when I'd seen that the 24-70 rolled all the way over, I thought it was just something to do with the design.

So is that the only difference or is there more seals in different places on the IS version? If that's all it is then it hardly deserves the "not weather sealed" tag.

I am looking to get this lens very soon. But I have a question.

How many of you got this lens then after using it for awhile wished it was the IS version? For $500 more, I cant see it. Also having the 100/400 I know that I used the IS very very little, less then 1% of my shoots. But I also have to remember that with the 70-200 it will be used for different type of photos.

any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

What do you need IS for? I shoot some kids soccer, and always have it on the tripod.

When the shutter speed is up to 1/2500th of a second, no one needs IS lol. When you get down to around 1/200th or slower, then it could be useful at times. I am able to use mine at about 1/125th with not much of a problem, just have to be conscious that you have to hold it perfectly still. At slow shutter speeds like that or slower, IS usually doesn't help much for my situations. I'm usually taking pics of kids which are moving and weddings where anyone can be moving. IS doesn't help at all with moving subjects.
To answer your question, no, I really don't want the IS version. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the quality I get from my copy of the lens and could never see getting rid of it. I guess there are times it could be useful. In those times, I just put it on a tripod.

I want this lens very badly, but have been told there could be another lens in this focal range in the works (here we go again). I can't afford the IS version and don't want the f/4 IS again as it's too slow for indoor shooting. Would you wait, or would you just get it now? I know - I suppose there really is no "right" answer to this question. *sigh*

Sorry to say it, but if you can't afford the IS version, you won't be able to afford the new one as it also has IS and is even more expensive than the current IS version... take a look...

I had the non IS, then the IS, and now I'm back to the non IS. I find the non IS version sharper wide-open than the IS, and I shoot there a lot. The IS did come in very handy at times but I can live without it for what I do with this lens.

I also need help- should I get this non is or save more to get the mk11 for a huge price difference $700- $1000, depending on how much B&H will price the MKii, which I estimate to be $2300, I will use this as an additional long lens to my 24- 105 mmL and then I plan to buy a 1.4 teleconverter for use in moon shots in a tripod. I plan to use primarily to shoot ari shows, landscapes, architectures and people, my grand kids indoor programs, parties . I have shot airshows with my 75- 300 mm and night shots with steady hands.
Another point do you think the used prices will go down once the Mkk II is announced?
Finally I am thinking of buying a Sigma 150- 500 plus the non is Canon 70-200 rather than the new Mkii , does this make sense?

I am guessing the 150-500 will be your primary airshows & moonshots lens.

you are thinking of getting a 70-200 2.8 in addition to shoot the other stuff , ..i would think you'd probably be better off with a fast prime to shoot indoor kids, for around the similar price range you can get a 35 1.4 .

Agreed - there is no way in heck I could ever afford that damn thing. Looks like a beauty though. I'll wait til I get a job working for someone else, lol. Not. There's no doubt I'll wind up with the 2.8 non-IS, it's just a matter of when. And not sure if I should invest in it and the 24-70L and wait on a body for a couple weeks (to see if anything new is to be announced), or just go ahead and get the 50D and this lens until I can afford the 24-70L again. Decisions, decisions.

Oh man, it takes VERY exceptional shots. I would love IS, but after looking through some of the pictures on that thread (it could just be the people using it, doubt it though), I find many more lovely shots on this thread.
I'm gonna go through some of my recent pictures since I've gotten my 5D. My 5D LOVES this lens. Well, my 40D does too. I think every camera would lol.

Yes. It is outstanding, and even a bit sharper than the IS version, everything else equal. You do have to remember to provide support and good hand-holding technique in low light, plus decent shutter speeds. Most people I know who went for the IS version were primarily looking for a good indoor-event solution, to allow for more "relaxed" hand-held freedom.

The first image being downsized doesn't do the picture justice as if it were being viewed larger. The crop gives a little more of an idea of how outstanding this lens is. These had no sharpening done except the default in Photoshop raw which I think is 25% with a 1.0 radius.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l201/dufrenbk/Davin/IMG_0181.jpg

100% crop for you pixel peepers (trust me, pixel peeping not necessary with this lens. it just has a superb professional-like quality to it straight out the box)
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l201/dufrenbk/Davin/IMG_0181crop.jpg

EDIT: and this isn't even the sharpest picture I've ever seen from it. I find my copy is sharpest around 100mm-135mm. This one is just with my new 5D so I put it

Good example. I agree that the sweet spot for Sharp on this lens is around 135mm. Interestingly, the 2 lenses I have that are sharper, are the 85 1.8 and the 135 2.0 (the best).

Once I sold all of my FD equipment including my 100mm macro lens, I still needed an auto focus, lens for my 10D and 30D. I've been using my 70-200 f/2.8 L with a Canon 500D to fit 77mm filter. This combination works great with a mounted Vivitar 285 on camera kicked down to 1/8 power manual setting. This resembles the bracket I made on which I mounted my camera and flash to do macro photography years ago.

Hi, I just dicovered this thread, after I recently got this lens. I have a question for the users here. I like taking pictures with this lens on a 50D. But it seems pretty heavy and sometimes I can't keep my hands steady. Do you have similar problems? Since I usually shoot portraiture, using a tripod is not usually a solution to me.

I can't imagine how those people use the IS version of this lens without a tripod.

BluewookieJim

You're not alone there. I consider myself to be pretty steady, but at 200mm, or even worse at 280mm with a 1.4x TC, this is all over the place for me. I've gotten good results with this lens, but I really have to concentrate on my technique, and even then my keeper rate is much lower than with my other lenses.

Truthfully, my best results have come when I use my monopod with this lens.

i use this lens 100% handheld and only sometimes get blurring if the light is really bad, forcing me to use a slower shutter
i originally planned to get the IS version but decided against it when i got this one, it's perfect and a lot cheaper

Though the IS version is supposed to help shaking hands, it's much heavier than the non-IS version such that, in terms of holding it steadily, the end result may be even worse!

I use a monopod or tripod with it when shutter speed gets lower then 1/250 with quite good results
