Ok we have a 70-200 f/4 best photo thread and we have a mixed 70-200 with extender best photo thread.
Since I am considering to get the 70-200 f/2.8 NON-IS I would like to see lots of photos shot with this lens so post You best photo with this lens.
Oh btw. please do not suggest a search on pbase. I know about that but that function is lousy.

Ok Tommy......since no has answered the call, I'll give you a couple. I moved up to this optic from the 70-200F4 and I found it a lot more useful!! Last month I traded it for a 200f2.8 prime, and while the prime was very very good, I think as far as IQ, I found little distinction between the two. The trade didn't work out (guy was uncomfortable with the cosmetics of my well-used 70-200F2.8!) so we traded back again!! I think I''ll keep it since it seems to be a tough sell in it's condition (cosmetically!!). Anyhow, it is a great optic, sharp, great contrast and colour, and it is sharp wide-open!! Here are a couple of shots of Julia taken recently.........all wide-open at f2.8 and at the long end (200mm). I tend to use it at the long end 90% of the time. You can't really go wrong with this lens or any of Canon's offerings in this focal length. They are all good!!

This is my favorite lens next to my 600 f4. I contemplated getting the IS version but could not justify the extra 500.00 to 600.00 dollars. So far, I haven't regretted that decision.
Here's one more for your evaluation. Hope this helps. Some great examples already posted by another photographer.

"Best"? I dunno'; that's subjective, really. But this is one of my favorites:

It's Tim Flannery (former San Diego player and coach) and the California Center For The Arts in Escondido. CA. The lighting was great, and the f/2.8 non-IS saw a lot of work that night!

Schmoelzel, yours are absolutely beautiful, especially the last portrait. I took mine with a 5 D. I love this camera but have noticed increased noise since downloading firmware version 1.05. I hope Canon addresses this issue with a new firmware update soon.
I'm not used to the 100 KB image file size for this forum. I'm looking forward to using this lens in the studio with my 5 D when my house is finally completed.

Is it true this lens comes with its own tri-pod collar. Im guessing this means that it is a heavy beast!
Yes, it does come with its own tripod collar. It is not too heavy for me but it would depend on your own strength and build and how long you were going to be carrying it.

How about 1/40 sec. on a 70-200 IS with the Canon 1.4x II and Tamron SP 2x TCs on. 100% crop from a 5D. RSP with stock processing options. It stands up to optical abuse pretty well.

A bit of a crop, but not a lot - nowhere close to 100%. Again - RSP was used; I messed around a bit with the contrast at the time.

I was hesitant before i set this thread up, all i heard was how great the IS version is, it blocks out the great performance of the non IS that you have proven here, wait does that make sense? too many Pimms me thinks. Anyway i hope you keep posting, if it continues long enough i will be albe to post my shots when the lens arrives, wont be able to order it for another week though.
Anyone have any negative experience using a 2x converter with a 1.6 crop body?

It'll work with 2x. But don't expect as crystal clear results. I'd consider another lens if the 2x tc will be on the lens more than 50% of the time.

The hummingbird shot with 1.4x and 2x TCs (which isn't reflected in the EXIF, BTW) was using AF at an effective aperture of f/8. I get AF with that combo on both the 5D and 20D. It seems the Tamron just passes through the Canon's info without adding its own.

Photozone has performed resolution (sharpness) tests on both the IS and non-IS 70-200. The Non-IS, by testing, is sharper than the IS. So, IS is handy some-of-the-time, but I rather had the little extra sharpness all the time. And, since most of my shots/usage of the 70-200 are of action/sports ... IS doesn't do me much good. It all depends on what you shoot. IS is handy for those shots when a tripod isn't around or practical ... but a tripod beats IS for sharpness.

The sharpness is so minimal though. You'd likely see more lens to lens variation than anything. I doubt most people would even notice the difference with a test against the two without each being labeled. And since Canon's always tend to produce images that are on the soft side, you are going to end up sharpening anyway, whether it is the IS or non-IS.
And Jon made a good point. It does correct handshake blur, even when you are at higher shutter speeds.
For you it works, for other people IS works. Only the person who knows what they are shooting will know which is better. The sharpness issue is not relevant compared to the weight, cost, things you shoot elements.
Obviously, buy what you can afford without any financial problems occuring from your buy.

Update - Photozone.de:
Maybe the difference between the IS ver. and non-IS is only very small cos Klaus on Photozone.de is going to make new reviews of the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS and of the Canon EF 100-400 L because he think, that the copies, which he has tested, were substandard copies. New reviews will follow in a short time.

I'm not sure I get these, "show me your best shots from a XXXXX lens" threads.
Unless you have something to compare it to how are processed and sharpened images of much value?
Arguably the 70-200 f2.8L is one of the sharpest zoom that Canon makes and it's optics are not really questionable at this point as the lens has been out for so long.
I have this lens and think it's a great deal too, but I'm just not sure if these types of threads are really helpful.

I agree. Even "straight from RAW" crops are pointless...there are different RAW softwares and different settings that mean different things.

Seen any of these threads for a Quantarray lens? How about a Canon 55-200? Perhaps people like to see what others shoot with the lens. Or perhaps characterisitics of the lens, like REALLY REALLY bad CA will show on a 800 pixel image, or how the bokeh looks. The kit lens is said to be a horrible lens but the thread for that has proved that it CAN be a useful lens that creates beautiful images.

Pointless to some I guess. I just went through 3 pages of post just to see what (pre or post processing) the non IS can do. I checked out the IS post also for the same reason. For me it stands to reason that if many can get a great pic out of the lens then all is left is skill on the photographers end. I actually thought that the non IS photos looked better on average then the IS lens. My .02 cents.

The images from this lens are all teriffic! I am contemplating adding it to my arsenal. My only concern is the weight - is it really heavy coupled with a 30D? I have some problems with my right hand (wrist synovitis) and so the weight issue is of great concern. I know that using a tripod would help but I hate lugging around a tripod. Those who own this lens, could you talk about your experiences shooting without a tripod and any weight related issues you may have. I've read it's easy to balance it using the mounting ring against the palm.
Ben Fried
29th of January 2007 (Mon), 15:25
I thought I was going to hate the weight and it really doesn't bother me at all. People say it's SOOOO heavy, but in the end, it's just 3lbs.
I have it paired up with my 400d and I didn't even notice the weight standing and walking around at the race track for hours.
I can't tell you that it won't bother you though; every person is different. You might want to rent it as well as the 70-200 4.0 and see if the size and weight is worth the 2.8 aperature for you. For me, it was worth it.

The two shots I just posted are straight off the camera. Only PPing is frame, sig and resize for web.

Some processing (curve, resize, a little USM), was hand held at 1/800th, f/2.8. Will take a little getting used to gripping something wider than I am used to, but very impressed with the performance.

So I bought a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L from a friend today, I am amazed at the sharpness of that lens  of course reducing them didn't help on the quality but I think you can still see it =)
here are a few test pics that I took:

I bought this lens several days ago and did the first "real world "test on my godchild's birthday party this past weekend... Absolutely crisp pictures... The weight didn't bother me at all... I had it on the camera about 95% of the time... Check out the clarity...

I was thrilled with this image when I printed it. I did a 16 x 20 print and it turned out great. It helps that the subject is 22 feet in length and weighs 12,000 pounds. I can tell when this lens comes off the camera. It is worth every penny.

Thanks. Some, but I PP everything that I keep.:)
...I go out and shoot during lunch every day. This woman said she doesn't take good photos and I bet her she could. Taken in shade on auto as we're walking out building. Started out being a creative, tilted shot, but the bricks made me dizzy viewing them on the angle, so I straightened image w/CS2.
1. ran a defog to image
2. +10 contrast
3. slight selective color adjustment (sometimes black skin tones need touch of magenta, which doesn't look so good on white skin tones)
4. created highlight layer and adjusted that with either overlay or soft
5. added approx. 3.0 blur w/mask and painted back eyes/lips/teeth (she has very good skin)
6. final sharpening
7. burned down some of the yellow in dress
The frame and glow was just me messing around for presentation's sake here, but not something I'm adding to her final print.

I'm sill stuck between this lens and the IS version. I've heard that most of the time, the non-IS versions are sharper than it's counter-part. Thing is, you can fix the "sharpness" in post-processing. :(

My son looking his best after a soccer match in muddy conditions. This is a great lens and it is especially good for shooting youth sports! The other shot is one of complete joy. This thread has caused me much headscratching - I was set on the IS version, but the photos in this thread pose me the very real question as to if I actually will use its abilities versus the extra cost, plus I can afford this one now, the IS would be another 3 months away...
I am in awe of these photos, well done all.

I'll throw in a couple. My first 70-200 was the IS version, had it for over a year and sold it to a friend, then decided I needed it again, and bought the non IS version. Really couldn't tell much difference in sharpness or IQ, of course I am getting older and my eyes aren't what they use to be. The BIF shot was shot using the 1.4 II extender just about sunrise. The fountain was shot late at night just to see what 2.8 would do. Both shots were handheld....

There are some really nice shots in this thread. I am looking at getting this lens as I want to pass my F4 version onto the hubby as his 100-300 just died (he is not as serious about his photography as I am) I have the 85 F 1.8 but I’m thinking this would be more versatile and I do have a couple of weddings to do this year. I can’t get the money together for the IS version and I handhold well anyway, I handhold my 400 F5.6 L all the time with no problems and never have owned an IS lens. Is this lens heavier than the 400 prime?

The non-IS version is a pound lighter than the 400 5.6. The IS version is about the same as the 400.
