They are incredible fast. The second one was sitting on a piece of wood. I thought it's posing for me, so I went closer with my camera. Suddenly I saw a little spot from my eye angle, and the Robberfly saw it too, or better, it waited already for the prey on that wood. To take down the other fly happened in a split second.

The second shot really shows that the robber meant business, I was reading up on the UK robber fly today - seems it's endangered and on the red list so it doesn't look my chances of seeing one here are good. I'll just enjoy everyone elses shots :)

There are about 50 species of robberflies here in the Okanagan and six or seven of them are endangered and protected. Both species here are on that list.
Robberflies are one of my favorite bugs to hunt them with my camera, so I'm sure to be able to post some more pictures of them :)

Great captures. I don't often see these guys here as well. I only saw one once and lukily I had my camera with me at that time.

It looks like they need those "muscles" for their wings. It was even flying with that huge Cranefly.

I'm not that bug expert (but I'm trying to get to know more about them), I'm "just" the photographer. But I was told these are two different species, both endangered.
EDIT: You're right Brian, just got to know #1 is the female and #2 is the male of an undescribed, rather uncommon species.
