that is for PCMCIA, for USB or FireWire you can use a "Card Reader"

A small card reader is useful to have in your bag. You never know you need to download photos to a computer...

I have one of these too, and it works fine. You don't need to have your camera close at hand to transfer the files, which can be a blessing :)

one of the best $7 i ever spent. you dont even need a branded one. i have a generic one thats so generic it hurts =P and its awesome. ebay has a ton of them, a quick search "compact flash pcmcia" came up with plenty for cheap

I have the PCMIA card in my laptop, but I just bought a (3rd) usb2 reader, as it should be faster. but I love having the card in the laptop all the time (I keep an old 8mb card in it when I am not using it)

The PCMCIA adapters are very slow. There are Cardbus ones available, which are faster, but costlier.

For new laptops with ExpressCard/54 slots, there is such a thing as an ExpressCard/54 CompactFlash reader, though they're not that common (I presume they use USB 2.0 reader circuitry; there's both USB 2.0 and a version of the PCI Express bus on an ExpressCard slot). For those with ExpressCard/34 slots (some new Apple laptops) you're stuck; there isn't enough room in an 34mm wide slot to accommodate a CompactFlash card.

No gold stripe... is this 16bit? meaning not 32 bit cardbus? I ask because my laptop does not have cardbus support:rolleyes: , yes it is old. P133, but believe it or not it runs W2K.

I believe this is the fastest transfer speed you can get on a laptop. A very good product...I love it. It is always in the laptop...standing by.

I have 2 cheap card readers, one just reads CF cards and one that reads 7 different types. They are both a lot faster than the camera with cord.

Only $35 at adorama
It says that it is faster than firewire, then it is faster than usb.

Firewire vs USB speed info.
Question: Which is faster Hi-Speed USB 2.0 or FireWire?
Answer: In sustained throughput FireWire is faster than USB 2.0.

Question: If Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is a 480 Mbps interface and FireWire is a 400 Mbps interface, how can FireWire be faster?
Answer: Differences in the architecture of the two interfaces have a huge impact on the sustained throughput.

Make sure you get the updated driver on the delkin site...claims a 10% increase in speed.

I picked up a cheap PCMCIA CF adapter for my old Celeron 400 laptop last week. Works fine, but it takes roughly 15 minutes to offload a 2Gb card.

Can't complain though, as it does work, and quite reliably, and was less than $8 including shipping off of eBay.

If you have the option, though, I'd go with an external USB 2.0 reader, if your laptop has a 2.0 port. Mine doesn't, so it was a choice of buying a reader and a USB2.0 PC card, or just the CF adapter card. The latter was much cheaper and more compact, so it got the nod until I upgrade the whole laptop.
