I have an Elan7 that I'm just getting comfortable with, and I'm seriously considering a 10D.
What I was wondering is if there was anyone else out that with both, who "misses" features that the Elan7 has but the 10D doesn't.
I'm going to try and find a 10D to play with this weekend, but with all the experience on this board I'd thought I'd ask here too.
thanks,
paul

I use the Elan II same features as the 7 with the exception of the 7 points focusing. I carry the II everywhere I go as a backup but I only use it for homework since the local classes has not gone completely digital yet. The only way to know your tools is to use it so everything becomes second nature to you when it is time to shoot.

I have a 10D and an elan 7 (well, an eos 33) and I must say they are the perfect pair so I can use film and digital.
I don't miss any features on the elan 7 because everything I use is morrored on the 10D. The controls are different but not significantly different so it is very easy to use them both. I also find the 10D feels slightly better in your hands (with the bg-ed3 grip) than the elan 7 with the bp 300.
Get the 10D and you will have two very well matches cameras. If you do have a play make sure that there is someone there who knows the 10D well so you can ask how to get to certain features.
I now use the 10D for most of my photography, but still take the elan 7 out loaded with velvia for my landscapes :)

Ironic :)
I have a 10D and my wife still wants to shoot film so we're looking at getting an Elan7 and sharing gear. (Heh, I'm just waitin' for my wife's first interest in an expensive lens! Of course, I'll be very understanding and provide the proper encouragement ;))

Wow - sounds like I stumbled on a good pairing purely by accident.
Well, as much as going with Canon can be called an accident. Damn they make good stuff.
Thanks!

You are right on Surfmonkey :)
The Elan7 is the closest you can get to the 10D in a film camera,. they are Sisters!

I also have both the elan 7 and the 10D. I was using the elan 7 for over 2 years (i think) before i picked up my 10D. In doing so, everything felt so natural to me. The 2 cameras are VERY much alike. Controls are really not that much different. The only big difference in controls really are only the controls that you DON'T have on the elan 7 (ie. white balance, ISO). I'd say, go for it. You'll love it. you'll be taking the leap from film to digital with minimal self adjustment.
BTW, i too stumbled upon this great combination by accident, just by wanting the 10D for it's price.

I got the 10D BECAUSE I was an Elan IIe user. When I took the first plunge into digital photography early this year I did it with a Powershot G3. However, the G3 just didn't feel "right" so 5 days later, I bought the 10D. The only major physical difference I noted between the Elan IIe and the 10D, other than the obvious fact that one was film and the other digital :), was the heftier weight of the 10D.

I have owned the Elan 7e since it was released, and I thoroughly enjoy using it. Then in May I purchased the 10D and it was extremely easy to "switch" formats. The learning curve is very small. When setting the custom functions in the 10D you don't need the instructions booklet to tell you which setting does which, the LCD screen spells it all out for you in English - very nice. The 10D compared to the Elan 7 has a slightly smaller "field of view" inside the viewfinder as far as the image is concerned, but it allows for an easier way of looking at the information. This is extremely handy expecially for those of us who get to wear glasses in order to see this world.
I do recommend getting the eye-piece extender though. This will help keep your nose from bumping the buttons on the left side of the body. It also helps to keep your nose from smearing sweat on the LCD while shooting in warm/hot weather. $15.00 US
I think the only things that I like better on the 7e that I kinda miss is the Mode Dial is easier to grab on to and turn. The one on the 10D is set in to the top plate a bit more, and its a little harder to turn - feels like a stronger spring against the detents.
The other thing I think would be the Eye Control Focus, although since I wear glasses sometimes the Elan 7e 'misses' the correct target and I have to reposition the camera or look at a different target - not a fool-proof technology, but quite handy at times.
I hope this helps, Best wishes ~James
