Three images taken on the Farne Islands yesterday, Northumberland Coast, UK - Home to many nesting sea birds at this time of the year, most are currently sitting on eggs. The Island is owned by the National Trust and is well worth a visit if you enjoy photographing Puffins, Shags, Razorbills and even some Gannets can be seen on the wing from the boat although they don't nest on the islands.

Lovely images, David. I particularly like the Shag (no comments please) It is not easy to see the greenish tinge to their plumage with the naked eye. Good job. :D

Very nice photos David. Really like the first one.
When I eventually get to visit the UK I'll have to remember the Farne Islands. I'd love to see a puffin in real life. They look like a penguin crossed with a parrot to me.

I just love the Puffin. What a great shot of a really unique bird. Wish we had them around here!!

Excellent captures, David.
I love the way you've cropped the images in the first two.
The detail of the third is great and I like the uncluttered background.
As Trevor says, you've done an excellent job to keep the detail in the plumage of the shag.

Tommy Noddy eh!
Well, you learn something every day.

Fantastic shots David, particularly the Puffin. I've been reading up about visiting this area recently, it's great to see some shots, thanks for sharing. Can I ask what lens/focal length did you need for these shots? Have you got any good tips for visiting the Farne Islands? Which island is best (I'm particularly interested in the Puffins) Inner Farne or Staple Island? (Sorry for all the Q's!) :)

Nice shots :) im off to the Farnes at the end of the month :) Will be glad to get anything close to these :)

Apparently the whole day bird watching trip is the one to go for, if you are a member of the National Trust you dont have to pay the £5.00 (approx) per island landing fees. Im taking the 100-400L and thats about it really (well the camera obviously ;)) !

Thanks for all your comments - there are certainly some great opportunities for good images at the Farne Islands.

The lens was the Sigma 50-500mm, most of the images that day were taken between f5.6 - f7.1 all hand held and in the case of the puffin image, from the boat with a slight swell.

Anyone interested in going the "All Day Trip" is the best more info can be found here (http://www.farne-islands.com/index.htm) it is approx 5 hours and lands at two islands weather permitting.
