View Full Version : Sin Bandera in Concert, May 4th, 2006 [Large Images Warning]

The casino has been bringing in a much greater percentage of Latin bands this year than last. The concerts seem to sell out quicker and the patrons seem to spend more money. I really enjoy the groups even though I don't understand a word they say or a lyric they sing and haven't heard of any of them. So, while I have two more Latin concerts in the pipeline right behind Sin Bandera, it appears there is no end in sight. My next shoot will be Johnny Mathis! Anyway, here's the images:

Nice shots Dwight...

#3 just rocks, I also really like #4. Heck #5 is not bad either...I might have to give that one a try! LOL (I wonder where you got the idea?). The only thing I would have liked better about #5 is if you could get the artist to look at you?

Question, on the collage why no drop shadows on the small pics? I kinda like the 3D look it gives them? Just curious? I really like the background!

Chris, thank you. The guitar guy was just a sideman and didn't look at anyone. As for drop shadows on the small pics, I didn't think of it ... maybe I will go back and see how it looks!

Sir you really know your stuff. If I can eventually produce something halfway here i will die a happy man.
Put me down for a number 3.

Hehehe, glad I'm not the only one still editing pics I took in April ;)
I like th guitar head shot very much. Other ones are good as well. The collage needs some work IMHO: too cluttered. Maybe a few less 'little photo's' or align them (at least some of them), or use a drop shadow? As it is, the big 'background' image gets lost...

Dwight,
When I grow up, I want to make images of this quality.
What lens? Tripod or Monopod?
Enjoy!
Jim

You guys are very nice. The fun part is that I was allowed only the first two songs to shoot these two guys. There were several other photographers there, mostly from Spanish language papers and TV. It was a riot. One guy had a 20D but his battery was dead. I don't bring my 20D so I couldn't loan him one (I am always willing to loan equipment to visiting photographers.) Another guy had a P&S mounted on a tripod but couldn't seem to find a place where his lens would work for him. I didn't even see what happened to the other one or two. I made sure to give my card to each of them and offer courtesy images. Only one guy, from El Mexicano de Santa Barbara got images as I sent them (he had given me his card) without waiting to hear from him. He also asked for images from the Cinco de Mayo shoot the next night (images in the pipeline that I will put up this weekend.)

Cal, I have a 1D Mark II and a 1D Mark IIN. I had my 300mm f2.8 on one and 70-200mm f2.8 on the other. Somehow I have managed to leave the EXIF in the images (which I prefer but sometimes I do something that drops it.) The images in my next thread will feature the 300mm f2.8 mounted on my Wimberley head on Gitzo carbon fiber legs that I haul in there if I can shoot a least three songs. This is a big setup that I often use at one side of the stage (down in front with the audience where I always am) and sometimes from back at the lightboard. I have used my 1.4TC and 2.0TC with it.

I just uploaded a revised version of the collage with drop shadows.

I like it much better, the only thing I would change...just might help the balance is the void in the top left. There seems to be to (so when do I use to or too, come on help me with that one?) much back ground next to the small pic of the keyboard player. If you spread out that row a little more I think it would balance a bit better. Just my $.02 cents worth.

Let's see, I don't know the correct English terms, but use "too" (as you should in this case) to mean "a lot", such as "a lot much"="too much". Use "to" when it is going somewhere as in "going to the store". I'll let you figure out "two".

Yes, the spacing of small images. First let me say that the reason for so (or "too" meaning "a lot") many images is that I use the collages to show most or all of the available images on the CDs I provide. I actually have no idea if the casino is aware of that ... they provide virtually no feedback other than those checks ... it is sometimes strange! :-) In this collage I was trying to have a touch of randomness and trying to leave enough space so that the background image was not totally disguised. As you know, these things take a huge amount of time and energy and sometimes, too (which is this usage means "also"), I just have nothing left!

Here is another image that I liked ... it is the keyboardist and you can see the keyboard in his eyes:

Thanks Dwight, no I like the randomness too. I can not make any comments right now because I have to go to a shoot. I'll check in about two.

Damn I hope I got that right!

Yup, that 'two' is the easy one to be sure about, too! :-) Look at Jenni, too! Marichi Divas coming tomorrow.

Out of the various threads you have at the moment dwight, #3 of this series is by far the winner. It has that 'awe' factor and is the kind of shot that should get printed on 20,000 posters and sold on their next tour. The exposure and skin tones seem spot on, and there is the right balance of space and props.

Well, thanks, Brad! It would be nice if they licensed it from me ... fortunately I was moderately well paid to take it in the first place. :-)

Pic 3, the keyboardist looks like he just broke a finger while playing. Seriously, #3 is fantastic.

Thanks, Danster, seems like everyone likes these expressions of emotion by the artists ... he was one of the two headliners in Sin Bandera. I may have to start using more of the "expressive" images I get rather than the technical and lighting criteria. :-) Here is one of the other headliner with quite an expression:

I often lurk your posts. It's about time I took 30 seconds to compliment you on your work. I shoot dance and theatre and know how challenging it can be. Great stuff!

I haven't posted in a while but I'm finding the Performing Arts section a great place to hang around and I will be sharing some images in a week or two after I get a new hosting site organized.

In the meantime, I'll keep lurking. :)

well, I have to say this is one of the many bands in latin america that are special , the romaticism, the vocals and the guitar that calls for a serenade, don`t you think?
Anyway the pictures are terrific, sharp as hell, good job.

Then I strongly recommend that you either go to my website or do a search here for my Juanes and Marco Antonio Solis threads/galleries. :-)
