I'm in need of information or recommendation. Can anyone suggest a good, reliable waterproof case for my G3? It's not for underwater photography. I do a lot of kayaking and rainforest trekking and would like to use my G3 under those wet conditions. Thank you!

Hi,
The German firm EWA Marine does make waterproof cases for the G3, and from what I've heard from others, they're quite good; I have no price information, unfortuantely.
See http://www.ewa-marine.de/English/e-start.htm
or directly for the G3: http://www.ewa-marine.de/Pictures/b-D-CG3.jpg
The distributor in the USA is RTS photo:

hmm... looks very strange
it seems to be rather plastic bag (soft) through which you can operate camera switches, then real waterproof case

If your really serious about an underwater case for the G3/G5:
http://www.ikelite.com/digicams/g3front.jpg (http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/5can_g3.html).
Click on the image to take you to the website.
The case costs more than the camera.

I just can't understand why canon doesn't make it's own case for the G3. There's got to be a big market, and other manufacturers are making cases for similar cameras.
I don't want to pay $600 for a case, but $100-200 would be reasonable.
Anyone know someone at Canon who can explain?
J.

AFAIR canon's case for S45/S50 costs ~250$ in US so don't expect G3 case for 200 :(

Or there's the cheapskate's homemade waterproof case (good for use in the pouring rain or a snowstorm, but don't go diving with it).
Materials needed include a 1 gallon Ziplock bag, a pair of rubber gloves, a UV filter and lens adapter permitting the filter to be used with the G3, scissors, a rubber band, and some waterproof glue that'll bond rubber to plastic.
Construction details should be fairly obvious.
Hey, there's talk of a hurricane hitting the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US, later this week. Might not be a bad idea for those of us living in the area, who don't already have such a bag, to go whip one up.
Yeah! A fun "Do it Yourself" photo accessory project. Quick, easy, inexpensive, and highly practical. What an idea! (Don't forget to post pictures of your finished "weather bag," for the rest of us to admire. People lacking a second camera with which to take the picture may opt to use a mirror for this part.)

Thanks to all who answered my post and offered suggestions. I'll sift through each and every one. It is a shame that Canon does not offer an underwater housing specifically for the G series. Anyway, I do appreciate your taking the time to help me with this problem. Namaste!

Update: I think I'm sold on the EWA Marine UW housing. Thanx to bisebaer, marcin and mttmrphy for that suggestion. I'll compare prices with Adorama and bhphoto. 12345Michael...your moneysaving idea is great but I don't trust myself! dtrayers: nice, tempting...but $$$$$$!! Thanks, again, to all who offered a suggestion. This is a great site with wonderful, helpful people!

Thanks for the review. Sounds good. I made the plunge earlier this morning and made an online order through Adorama. Their price was $10.00 cheaper than bhphoto's. I can't wait to try it out....

Uh, one comment for anyone using any kind of waterproof casing, home made or professional. Make sure that you dry it out thoroughly, inside and out as often as possible.
I have used all sorts of cameras a lot in the tropics, and moisture accumulates in anything/everything. One of the easiest and best ways to dry out camera, lenses and other gear is to hang a low watt bare light bulb in a semi-closed container with all your gear inside overnight. Even a backpack will do. Sensible precautions against burning, of course.

After a lengthly search for the underwater housing for the G3...I finally got a response from canon... I guess we all have to either resort to a ziplock style bag for our 1000$+ camera...which obviously is worth no more than 100$ now, but i still bought mine at its release and back thenm it was a purchase worth its cost.
Here is the canon reply i received;
Dear Phil
Thank you for your E-mail inquiry regarding your PowerShot G3.
At this time there is no underwater housing for the PowerShot G3. Generally if a underwater housing is to be released for a product it is released when the product is made available. Due to the age of this unit we do not expect to see a PowerShot G3 underwater housing. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
It is only through our customers comments and suggestions that we are able to manufacture quality products that our customers will be able to use on a consistent basis. The fact that you took the time to write to us is indeed appreciated. Please be assured that your comments have been forwarded onto the appropriate Department for their information and review.
In other words... thank you for purchasing our camera, but if you want to shoot underwater, next time buy a camera that already has an underwater housing.
Thanks Canon!!! its nice to know you guys are there for the consumer!
