That is a great advertising style shot, very well executed indeed. I think it would be a good ad for mental health issues (seriously) as it communicates well about self alienation, good stuff.

That's wicked. The concept seems simple enough, but would you mind sharing your process?

This has been done before, I can't remember where I've seen it. I think it was in a photoshop book or magazine. Did you get the idea from this?

Thank you everyone for your comments. I've had the idea for a while now, not sure if i made it up or seen it somewhere, I probably saw a similar consept but the execution is original. I wanted to show a drama of a self separating from the being, sort of taking your soul out of your body.
There is no secret behind the editing. Just a lot of cloning and smudging. Actually the mood of the picture (background, colors and levels) took longer to create then the actual face removal. All together I had 17 layers and it took me about 3-4 hours to edit.
The original picture was shot with continous light coming from a soft box in the top left corner. I took the picture a while ago so I dont remember the exact settings but its definitly ISO 200 and somewhere in F.3.5 - shutter 100 area.

Were you holding something in the original photo?

No I wasnt, it just kinda worked out :D. Although it took me a while to get finger shadows just right and the finger on the nose didnt fit perfectly so I had to cut some of the nose .

Didn't you just take two shots? One with hand on face and one without?

I did 4 shots, 2 with me sitting and my hand holding nothing and 2 with me sitting and holding my head in my face. First problem is that its a self portrait meaning I had to get up every time and press the shutter button therefore every time my position was off. Now as I said before I took these a while back and only saw them for the first time this Friday. Both of the shots with me holding my head in my palm were way off (color and position wise). I decided that it would be more comfortable for me to use 2 other ones.
Now since in the second picture my face was turned a bit more it worked perfectly with the palm angle so basically I cut out the face from the second "similar position" picture and pasted it in the first one.
Although there was some shadow issues i think i worked them out pretty realistically.

GReat idea , and a great photo but I think the what's left of the face has too much PP artifacts. It appears very phototshopped. I've blanked out a face before it took a lot of fiddling around but I did get it perfect. Spend some more time with it. I think you're well on the way to making something to be proud of.

Overall... great job. I can still see where the eyes and facial features were. I'm also not 100% convinced with the modelling on the original head. Clean that up and I think it's great.
Of course, it's still better than a lot of the stuff I see out there these days.
nice job!
