I would like to buy a digital camera but I cannot decide which one. I read the reviews at dpreview and steve's sites but... it's hard to choose.

I like Nikon 5400 because of the many features and the wide lenses.

But on the most photo samples I saw on the net the quality of the photos was much higher for the Canon G3. (Also I don't consider G5 because I don't really need a camera with a lot of MP, I don't print large photos).

Also I'm new to digital photography (this shall be my first digital camera), but I cannot afford to buy a camera every 2 years, so I'm looking for a camera that I'm going to use for a long period of time.

Thank you!

PS: Which CF producer is more reliable? I'm thinking about Sandisk and Lexar. What speed should I look for? Should I also buy a memory card reader (if yes which one would you recommend me?)?

Here's a site in Japanese that compares the G2/G3 with some Nikons.

You can use http://babel.altavista.com to translate if you can't read Japanese. :)

Bottom line is that both have their strengths, but the G3 has better functionality and image quality.

Well, you are talking about cameras in different price range. You you trying to pick the best point and shoot camera around or the best camera for your $. For the price of a 5400, you can get G3 and many other attachments!

For camera info and side by side tests, you should look at this link:

They have Nikon 5400 and G5 (they also have G3 review).

I would like to get the Nikon 5400 but I have doubts because of the quality of image compared to G3 and I don't know if the wider lenses of the Nikon + some more fetures worth the money difference between these 2 cameras.

I would really like to hear the opinion of people that tried (or even owned) both these cameras if it's possible.
