Found this guy not far from my place this afternoon while out wandering about looking for birds.

Kookaburras (http://www.honoluluzoo.org/kookaburra.htm) are by far my favorite native Australian birds. Not sure what it is, there's just something about them http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I thought about cropping it in a bit closer, but I like the perfect blue sky and it felt like he (she?) needed a bit of space. It's also already quite heavily cropped - really needed a longer lens.

Canon 20D + 400 f5.6L
C&C welcome as usual.

The blue BG is stunning and your crop looks good to me.

Kookaburras seem to be smiling with their large mouths. Behavior wise are they as comical as they appear?

Nice shot ,but that bolt and washer are quite distracting to me.

Nice shot Mat. Why didn't you throw on your 1.4x TC if you wanted a bit more reach?

From time to time, we must have at least 12 to 15 kookaburras in the trees across the road. And although I do somewhat enjoy their collective calls I must say that I'm grateful that they're not ones to sing right around the clock. I think that would get mighty annoying, mighty fast.

Nice, I have to go to a zoo to catch them!

I think I would have gone ahead and cropped out the beam. You have a great capture of the head and body, why distract from it. You would still have your great background. You will never had a long enough lens.
