First things first....I am not a crank! Just been taking a few snaps of a mill in a small village in West Yorkshire called Saltaire. I downloaded them to view on my PC, and tried to clone what appeared to be a small bird flying in the background which spoiled a clear beautiful blue sky. On zooming onto the "bird " it now becomes grey and cylindrical! We do have an airport nearby but it don't look like a plane to me! I still have the original shot on my compactflash card. I know it's definatly not dirt! I don't know how to upload images so I can't show you the shot (sorry) but if anyone wants a copy for evaluation and comments please give me your e mail address and i'll sent it on. Maybe then, you can upload it yourself for others to see. Once again...I'm not a crank!

You better hope the Aliens don't find out you have a photo of their spaceship. They might abduct you and give you an anal probe!!!!!!!!! With that said, you better start telling everyone it was just dust on your sensor.

I think it might be either sensor dust, or a really far away blimp. I think that it is dust though, because the direction of the shadow of that object looks like it should have been on the other side of the object, or at least part of the object facing us should've been lighted. Notice how the light falls on the building, and compare to the object..

Thanks mcouper...Believe me it wasn't dust, as I took another shot in close succession and there was nothing there. What's the general feedback now there's an image to see?

By the way...image taken with new Tamron 28-75 XR Di 2.8 lens.....Cracking bit of glass for the money!

Forget the UFO...that's a nice pic...polarized, I assume??

Regarding UFO...really hard to say. If you took several pics in succession and this is the only pic w/ it and they were within seconds of each other...I'd probably chalk it up to a Pteradactyl from Jurassic Park....

No. That shot is totally as it is straight out of the D60. All parameters set to zero. No sharpening and no polariser. Mmmm...Pteradactyl...I never thought. Could explain why my car bonnet was covered in so much **** when I returned!

It is a beautiful picture nonetheless!
If you are really sure it's not dust, then I'd say I have no idea what it is, other than, again, maybe a blimp, due to the shadow not being that of a circular shape. I wish you'd noticed it at the time you took the picture, and then took several shots/closeups of it..
I really don't believe in UFO's, but I could be persuaded if the evidence was strong(er)!

Looks like you have another "UFO"....just above the tree on the right side of the pic.....

I'm not a crank either. But I do believe in UFO's and this is one of them: an UNIDENTIFIED Flying Object. Not necessarily an alien space ship. It almost looks like a Cave Rod (do a web search). However, either way, you should submit this photo to your local MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) Chapter (www.mufon.com, mufonhq@aol.com).

Check your camera for insects!
I just pulled a rogue midge out of my 10D!

If you really believed it was an UFO, this picture would be at CNN and you have replaced your Tamron with some decent L-glass.

henkbos:

I think you have misunderstood the word UFO. It just means Unidentified Flying Object (as mapdealer says). It's NOT another word for alien spaceship.
In this situation, as nobody can identify it, it's by definition an UFO.

By the way Tony.

How do you like the Tamron lens?
Do you have any testimages at f/2.8 to share?

Lars

But it may not be flying :)
UFO in this case should be better described as Unidentified Foriegn Object.
It is definitly an object that is very unidentified :)

Looks like an insect landed on the lens.

larshkj....I really like this lens for its size and portability. At the wide end @ 2.8 its a little soft.( ...a lot of lenses are at maximum aperture ) Stopping down an aperture or two improves the image considerably. At the tele end I find the images @ 2.8 more than acceptable. Again, stopping down improves the image a heck of a lot. I normally use the lens through the focal range between f5.6 and f13 and find the images pleasingly sharp. It's no " L " lens but then again it's plenty sharp enough for my uses at a quarter of the price. On that note, I see that the old worn out comments (yawn yawn) about a lens not being a proper lens unless its a "L" lens re- emerging. Maybe he should check out the latest lens test guides at www.photozone.de and see for himself just how close behind this lens is, compared to the equivelant "L" lens that he believes we should all have. Is it worth paying the £900.00 extra ? I'll let you work that out for yourself.

Um. Well I was in Saltaire on Sunday and noticed an unusual object in the sky. Could this be the same occurence? When did you take the picture? Reply!

I live in the West Yorkshire area. I was visiting friends in Saltaire, Shipley - Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me but sick that I missed the opportunity to record this event. I heard that this is a regular occurence in this area. What are your thoughts?

It looked like a dark grey object in the sky. Thought it was a plane/helicopter in the distance, until I noticed your post and it got me thinking. I am new to photography and this site was recommended for tips etc.

Ye small world. What interesting photographic opportunities are there available within this area apart from the unexplained? My own speciality is local road signs, scenic skies and clouds. Some times the local Baildon pubs are quite a catch.
