Hello,
I am new here, been reading forums for a few days and would like to ask for your opinion before I click on Submit Order at Amazon.
I am going from Canon PowerShot A70 to Rebel XT :D . I'll be taking pictures of landscapes, mountains (I live in Alaska, sooo many beautiful places up here). I am an avid gardener, so macro lens, of course. I also travel to Europe every year, perhaps I could use a lens for general 'around city' architecture pics, taking inside buildings - churches, etc.
1. Landscape: EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
2. Macro: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM
3. Travel: undecided. would 17-40 work for this purpose as well or do I really need a third lens?
Can I get 'better bang for the buck' with something else?
I want to buy from Amazon. They have Rebel:body only for $690 and Rebel with kit lense for $750. From what I've read here, the kit lens is not very good. But fifty bucks isn't that much and it comes in black  Anything else I need to know before I shell out $$$?
Thank you in advance for your input and advice.

If you ask me, that's pretty much okay.
17-40 will be a little longish for the city, but if you throw in a fast prime, like 35L, you’ll be quite covered for what you say you shoot..
And welcome to the forum!

Hey, you can get the Rebel XT from B&H for $645 with the kit lens, and the body for $500 something.

The kit lens is good in certain situations, but if you are going to get a wide angle lens, maybe skip the kit lens and go with a Canon 50mm/1.8 ($70). That way, you cover most of the kit lens range between the two lenses, but with much better versatility. Just a thought...
Moving on, I went with the Tamron 17-35 over the Canon 17-40L. Saved a couple hundred bucks and the pictures are great! If you want a walk around lens to compliment your wide angle, something like the Tamron 28-75/2.8 might suit your needs... or something in the 70-200 range for longer reach.
Good luck!

Thank you all for your input. Prices are definitely better in BeachCamera and B&H and I will go with one of those stores insted of ordering from Amazon.
I went back to FAQ Top Ten to look up the lenses and noticed that EF 17-40mm f/4L USM didn't get much love so I am wondering if it's really a best choice.
I did not placed the order and I will give it a few more days and read up some more.
If anyone has any suggestions, please keep them coming.

I just brought the Sigma 17-70mm. It's fast and sharp with a useful range, and it's really a great len for Marco photos! Got it from Sigma4less, and I believe I receive a good copy. (Finals stop me from having fun with my Sigma!)
