I just ordered my G3 from butterfly photo and they informed me that canon only provides a battery that last for 30 minutes. Now I would have to buy a 2 hour battery for 60 bucks!! Is this true!!

I know my G3's original battery didnt last very long either. I bought 2 new ones for 10 bucks each here and they work fine.

Scam and total bull....

For a still digital camera your battery life is generally measured in pictures and for video cameras in minutes of video. The battery that came with the G3 will get me through a day of shooting 100+ photos with the LCD on.

A 30 minute battery and a 2 hour battery for the G3 is a bigger bull story. The G3 only takes one size battery. The larger size Canon batteries will only fit their video cameras.

The sales person trying to sell you a 2 hour battery for a G3 is a total idiot, a liar, or both.

Check out the link below, taken from DPReview - a well respected INDEPENDANT review site. You need to scroll to the bottom of the page for the battery review table.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong3/page11.asp

The G3 scored third highest with a battery life of 4hr 32mins with screen left on - this equates to 455 shots; FWIW I get about 400 shots from a full charge.

Hope this helps

This is a common tactic used by disreputable photo dealers, in an effort to get you to buy expensive and unnecessary accessories - in this case, a $60 battery.

It's unfortunate that you ordered from Butterfly. I don't care if they advertised a price 2% lower than some other competitor; it's still a mistake to do business with someone who shamelessly tries to cheat you as a matter of course.

I actually had ordered my camera from broadway photo and got that same scam, but since I had done my research and read reveiw sites I knew that this wan't true (besides the fact that they had multiplied the price of the battery multiple times). I didnh't get another battery and have been VERY pleased with the length of time it has gone without charging!

Here's the answer. I've used it for quite a while and could not be happier. It's a 1500mAh replacement for the factory battery. The best part is that it's $29.95 including shipping. It seems to last forever. I charge it once in a while, although it has never run out for me. Check it out!! www.batterybarn.com

If the battery that comes in the camera is a Canon BP511, you should get very good results with it. My initial charge yielded 187 shots (not all in one day), including some use of the LCD screen.
Over the years I have heard some horror stories that included low prices - but charging extra for things like lens caps and straps that come from the factory, but were removed by the retailer. I don't know anything about the retailer you mentioned, but is it possible that the Canon BP511 was replaced with a cheaper one to get the price down?

I can only compare the G3 with a 511 against two
Kodaks and I must say the G3 is far superior to the other two I have had.....

I have a Canon digital camcorder and the G3... from what I understand the BP512 that came with the camcorder is superior (40% some sites claim) to the BP511 that came with my G3 which makes since to me...The camcorder runs down somewhat quickly, which again makes since.

They are both compatible with either camera. The 512 may be the battery the guy was trying to sell you. And doing a quick search for price I find the BP512 from $30 to $50...

Hope this helps
