Years ago when I was in high school (don't ask how many), my photography teacher made a challenge to us: shoot 25 rolls of film in a weekend. If we didn't think it improved our photography, he'd pay us back for the film. Of course, I ended up paying for the film. Any exercise that forces us to look for more ways to take a picture helps our photography. With the advent of digital, this experimentation is free.
Another exercise is to take a picture that strikes us, then force ourselves to take another 5, 10, or 15 shots of the same subject, using different angles, different lenses, different exposures, whatever. Generally, one of the later shots will be better than the first one we took, unless we're very experienced at previsualizing, like Ansel Adams.
Just a couple exercises I recently remembered and am going to try again myself.
