This is one of two bands I went to shoot at the House Of Blues in San Diego this past Friday night. They're a local-ish band, and they're crazy good. The name of the band is Gecko:

The House Of Blues was a great venue to shoot in. The Security staff was very accomodating, the Production Manager, who I received the credential from, was an absolute pleasure to work with, and (and most importantly) the lighting guy was a pro.

Comments, criticisms, suggestions, etc; the usual drill...

These are really nice!

I like your list of lenses and working on sort of the same path ....

Which lenses did you use for this shoot ?

Appreciate the comments.

These were all shot with the 70-200mm f/2.8L, ISO of 1600. I went with Tv mode, at 1/80th of a second...

Nice! How did you get the high perspective ... I am not familiar with the venue? You seem to be mastering that 20D! :-)

Hi Steve,

Nice shots, I like 1 and 5 (that latter because I like to simplify my own photos)

I was wondering though if shooting wide open would've helped in photos 1 and 4 would've helped to bring out the subject from the rather busy background (might be wide open already, though).

Dwight, I've never told you this, and you have to promise to keep it a secret:

I can fly.

In all seriousness, the House Of Blues has a balcony. It was closed to the public on Friday, but Security let me by the barricade...

Well, I don't now about that...

Thanks.

I don't recall if it was wide open or not. If it wasn't, it was pretty damn close...

I like 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8. The backgrounds seem very busy in a lot of them and some of the exposures look a little off, but that fricken hat makes things difficult (eg in 5 half the face is in shadow and half seems blown out). I agree with kmb's comments about a shallow dof helping remove some of the clutter.

Thanks for sharing.

I did some shooting, of another band, with the 85mm f/1.8, and the backgrounds are a bit less pronounced, but not to the degree I think you'd expect. In a lot of these (and the ones shot with the 85mm), I was a good distance from the stage, and the backgrounds are similar...

it was pretty well lit, then, eh? last night i metered a couple of shots @ 2.8 just to see what the shutter speed would be, and it was pretty low i believe (can't recall the details). the places i shoot seem to be definitely needing 1.8 apertures, even @ 1600 ISO.

It was well lit except for the one band I really wanted to shoot. The guy doing their lights didn't really impress me. At all. The band likes the shots, but I'm disappointed with them.

For the other bands, though, it was pro-level lighting...
