From The Greatest Show On Earth: The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. I have a bunch that I want to share, so keep an eye out for "TGSOE."

I find clowns somewhat unsettling. These clowns were more like gymnasts in costumes.

Again, terrific shots. Finding clowns unsettling is apparently a fairly common phobia and likely has some deep arhetypical cause (I am serious here), but I won't speculate. I think you need to switch to circus shooting ... it is clearly your forte! :-)

Thanks Dwight! I'll tell my family I'm running away to join the circus. As for clowns, as a teenager I read Stephen King's, It. Then as a young adult, I was almost killed by a wreckless clown driving a Honda Civic. I only saw the driver - in full makup and gear - but knowing clowns, there probably 30 or 50 more hiding in the back seat.

No lions, but there were tigers, though the trainer wasn't my type: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=170012

Those are really good as well.

He is not my type either. A few years ago we saw them and they had the first female tamer in their history. She was something else.

Great clown shots JF I like these a lot. I've got a special shoot coming up with a clown in a few months time, we're going to explore some unusual themes for a clown to be in.

Roger.Hopefully the clown will suffer in these shots. I Kid, I kid! I'd like to see those when they're done - sounds pretty cool.

JF, great shots. Colours are great. I havent done much indoor photography but would like to. Please share your exif data with us. What lens are you using? Thanks. The first and third were with a 17-40 f/4L, the rest were with the Tammy 28-300 f/3.5-5.6. Shutter speeds were all over the place. Most of the keepers at 300mm had shutter of at least 1/320. They were all shot wide open at ISO 1600-3200. I used AV mode and Evaluative metering with no EC. I'm a fan of partial metering, but there was so much going on lighting wise here it made sense to use Evaluative.

Do you find the noise at those ISO settings is a problem?

You tell me.:) Seriously, I think a properly exposed image at a high ISO beats an under exposed image that's pushed in the raw converter. The latter method always yields more noise. For all of these, I used a suface mask with Noise Ninja. The surface mask protects the edges and detail from the noise reduction which allows more aggressive settings in your NR software without getting that "plastic" look. The ability to gain two or three stops of shutter speed by a flick of the dial is one of the biggest advantages of digital.

I think they do balance it out, or at least try to. I know my wife and daughter really like the clown Bello, and only want to go when he's in town with the show.

Thanks for the info JF, you have inspired me. I can't wait for the next circus to come to town.
