markings suggest Xanthogramma peddissequum though the yellow is deeper in my book.

Nice shots Jeff, I'm yet to get an image of a hoverfly. Well, I think I got one a week ago, but it was blurry and badly underexposed (flash died on me right at that time). They have such lovely colours!

Thanks for the ID Everybody . I have a question, I am shooting in the av mode no flash, tipod, rc-1 with a lite breeze daily. should I use the man mode and flash to deal with the breeze. When focusing my camera does beep and flash red when focused. Just a little sharpness please. Jeff

Are you actually using Autofocus or are you just using the beep to indicate focus lock with manual focus?
Nearly all the people here will be using manual focus as the camera often has no idea what you are trying to focus on.
You should get better results in manual with flash (say F11, 1/200th) but wind is a problem with any settings if it's causing the bug to go in and out of focus.

Thanks Brain, I am in manual focus, auto focus locks on everything you don't want. I will start experimenting with my flash and Manual mode. Jeff
