What printers do you suggest. Im willing to spend up to 500$ for a photo/document printer. All I need is that application,no faxes scanning etc. Been looking at Canons i950 amongst others . Thanks for your suggestions.

Get a Canon i9100 or the s9000 if you need 13" wide prints .
If you only need 8.5" prints, get the i950 or s900. Any one of them will give yousuperb prints that are indistinguishable from darkroom prints.

Yes those printers are great for printing, best to get one you can also use with a PC if you have one.

You don't really need to look beyond the i950 or i9100, unless you have a special application or requirement. Mine more than meets all my needs and my other two excellent printers are now collecting dust.

I love my i950! My jaw hit the floor when I saw the first print! People who have seen my prints can't believe that they did not come from a photo lab. If I need anything bigger than 8.5", I'll get it done at a lab. Paid 249 w/ free shipping from Dell.

I feel I should l wade in too. I got my i950 three weeks ago and the quality of print is exceptional. I've never seen anything like it from a printer. It's $500CDN (about $25US these days ) but well worth the money.
Using Canon paper does make a difference. I printed out on some old Epson paper I had and there was very (and I do mean very) slight banding, nothing that was visible from 6" away. But on the Canon paper it was absolutely perfect.

Sorry about your jaw, Mattman.
Yes paper is important. I use Canon, Ilford and Tetenal. I have tried others with bad to mediocre results. The worst was HP. Ink and paper need to be well matched.

Get the Epson 1290. Great price and goes to A3+. I have printed stunning images on Epson Premium Photo Glossy paper using the 1290.

Of the Canon printer users, have you used the Canon matte paper and what were your results? I have used Photo Paper Pro exclusively with my i850, but wouldn't mind saving some money. Also, which paper setting do you use as my i850 does not have a specific "Matte" setting?
Thanks in advance

Just to add my 2 cents. You can't beat the Canon Printers the real plus to them is the individual ink tanks.
"lot cheaper to buy just one colored tank, very seldom do all the colored inks run out at once".
I've had great success with Kodak glossy, I've got an older Canon 620e (630e) not sure of the exact number
Would love to get one of the newer ones but can't justify it yet cause this one is still doing a great job.

I also have the Canon i850 and love it! The quality of print is better than commercial photo labs!!!
Here is a great review on the i950 vs i850 and other printers at Tom's Hardware :

My S900 driver has a setting for matte photo paper and it works great with Canons matte paper. But I mainly use Kodak Ultima paper printing from Photoshop using the profile 'Kodak sRGB Display' that became available when I installed Kodak Easy Share.

All,
It appears that the Canon i950 is being discontinued and being replaced by the i960. On the Canon web site, looking at the specs, it looks to be the same printer except it is about $50 cheaper.
