Shortly after 10AM today (May 15) Lt. Allen Oswalt, Portland Fire & Rescue PIO, stopped on westbound I-84 to assist at a
minor accident. A Portland police officer, on his way to a detail, also stopped. Since his assistance was not needed,
he continued westbound.
A few seconds later, a car flew over the barrier from the eastbound lane and landed directly in front of the officer's car.
The collision injured the officer and killed the female driver of the other car. In the photo you can see both cars and the
officer being taken to the ambulance.
It took about 1-1/2 hours to extricate the victim. Most of that time was spent waiting for the M.E.,
but it did take 15 to 20 minutes to get her out.
At 2PM I noticed both directions of I-84 were still closed.
