Maybe its just late, but I'm feeling really dumb right now. Is it just me or is smugmug kind of confusing to navigate?

Okay.. I'm trying to load my photos in, and I've created the Galleries, which are in categories and sub-categories.. but how do I create Sub Galleries?

For instance, I have the gallery called Domink, in the category people, sub-category children, yet it shows his gallery right up top. Is it possible to have your gallery, then galleries within it?

Does that make sense?

Sub catagories can be a little difficult until you get the hang of it.

You have to create the sub catagories through the control panel in the organize & customize section.

Then after you have made the sub catagory in the catagory you want, (You have to make sure you select the right catagory that you want to create it in from the dropdown box.) you can add galleries to that subcatagory.

Hit the New Gallery button from the top toolbar.

Insert your title.

Then from the dropdown boxes select your; Catagory then from the next box, SubCatagory.

For example in my sports catagory I have sub catagories for H.S. football by year so to make a new gallery I would.

Title: East vs. West
Catagory: Sports
Subcatagory: Football 2006

On my homepage I will see the catagory of sports with a thumbnail from one of the pics inside it.

When I click on sports it will show the sub catagories on top, with the galleries contained inside the sports section below.

Hope that helps!

YES! My biggest gripe about SmugMug is its navigation. Otherwise I like it for the most part. Good luck!

I have trouble with arranging my galleries on Smugmug also.

I have a bunch of galleries with names like "Rome, Venice, etc., which are all categorized as Travel, with sub-category of "Italy 2005". My problem is that all of the galleries show up on my main page, and there is no way I can find to instead have a main gallery called "Italy 2005" with sub galleries inside for cities or regions.

Is this something that you can only get if you buy a higher level of service from Smugmug?

Oooh, I don't know...

I do have a professional account. In the control panel under organize & customize do you have the option to creat new Catagories? Mine does.

It will show at the top level if its the only Gallery in its category. As soon as you have 2 galleries, it will show the Category - I think. Otherwise its as Kevin says.

My Galleries are all displayed in the category/subcategory heirarchy - but I do have a Pro account.

This is the problem that I'm having too. I followed the directions, and thought I was doing it correctly, but all the galleries show up on the main page... If I go into that gallery, and then work my way back, they are the way that I want them.

Maybe it is a pro account thing.

Jen,

Taking a look at your gallery (Jennifer White > People > Children > Children) you have set up the Children gallery in a children subgallery, but like EOSAddict stated earlier since the sub gallery is the only gallery in those catagories it shows up on the main page.

*edit* Boy that looks confusing... but I think it's right.

Makes sense to me Kevin ;)

I am able to create custom categories and sub-categories, and to asign galleries to any of those. I currently have about eight galleries that are in the category "Travel", and in the sub-category of "Italy-2005", and they all still show up as individual galleries in the main page. No group or category rollup occurs for me at all. If I go into a gallery that is categorized like this, there is a "where am I" bar at the top of the page listing that looks like this:
Steve Wike (sdwike) > Travel > Italy 2005 > Amalfi/Ravello
If I then click on the "Italy 2005" portion of that, it will go to a page that lists only the "Italy 2005" galleries. What I am trying to acomplish is to have that "Italy-2005" top-level listing show up in my main page, rather than the eight gallerier that are below it.
If these work differently in a Pro account, then that would be the answer.

Oh good! I had one of those moments where I reply, then looked over what I wrote and went, "What am I on about?"

I think I'm just tired today.

I think the issue here is almost like Jen's, only you only have galleries in the Travel catagory, and no where else. Since you don't have them anywhere else it defaults them to the front page. Add another gallery and it should look the way you want it. (I'm not sure if the gallery needs a picture or just has to be made.)

Uh oh...

SWPhotoImaging, Scrolling though your galleries I just found the nature catagory and now I'm confused. It shouldn't be doing that. I think it's still a version of the same problem but I can't quite explain it.

(Btw, you have some really nice pictures, I really like some of the ones in the Roma gallery.)

There wasn't a link, I just followed his gallery nav from his post: (sdwike) > Travel > Italy 2005 > Amalfi/Ravello

If nothing else, trying emailing SmugMug. They've been VERY fast at getting back to me when I've had problems/issues.

Or try dgrin.com - smugmug's forum. The House Pro and even smugmug CEO are often on there answering questions.

I think I may have the answer Steven,

If you go to your homepage, at the top right of the gallery category section there is a display: categories . galleries option. I assume yours is selected to galleries!

see below....

I actually changed it like this.. I had seperate galleries for each child originally.. so it said Jennfier White > people > Children > (here i had two, Dominik, and Adrianna).. but when I realized what it was doing, I combined them and just called it children.

In the above post I see that option galleries/categories.. I'll try that and see what happens :)

Yes! I have lots of the cathedral as well, I just need to upload them to my site. Glad to see somebody nearby! I've been here for a year and a half, with a year and a half left. I love Ely.. but boy do I miss home (California).
