This is the one I've been waiting for. A huge, one time (hopefully not), mega-meet. I'm talking party. Just huge. We need to start taking donations to get this thing going. I tihnk obviously NYC would be the place to have it (center of everything, and all). With all of the friends on here, and friends that everyone has made, it's time for a "family" union. I wanna hear everyone's input on this. I know it's a stretch, but this should just happen.

Well, if I know Pio, he'll be there. He lives there. I live about 4 1/2 hours from Manhattan and I have family in Brooklyn, so I can come if the date works out. As far as accommodations, there are some inexpensive places to get rooms. Just let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.

Oh, y'all just give me a lot of notice.. both of my sisters and one of my stepmother's are in Virginia and, I learned the last time I was out there Virginia is not that far from New York (tiny states).. plus, i've been wanting to go back to New York City.. and with POTN it would be a fantastic justification to go across the country... I think some of the folks from across the pond should come too.. (I know Dave's a world traveler :D .. okay, so it's not Africa. but think about it.. )...

Now, all I got to do is delicately bring up to family that I wanna go to the East Coast to meet online photography friends... wish me luck...;) ;)

I vote for Copenhagen

Seriously it could be fun but something like this would need a LOOONG planning period.

I do want to see New York someday so, but then again I also want to go back to San Diego which could also be a great spot to meet.

Maybe I should plan on picking up all the MD people on my way up from VA. :)

Actually, if I had a nice place there in NY, I'd say everyone can stay at my place, but since I'm here in VA, we could talk DC., but B&H isn't here. :(

I suspect a world POTN world meet up is a good idea, but organised on a continent basis during the same time period, with people feeling free to travel to different continents if they want to.

Thanks for the thought Sari, but I've been to enough places to know NY is only 'centre of everything' if one lives in Waverley  :rolleyes: but if you're ever in the UK then it would be nice to say hi.

Not in NYC. Not even near it, really. Closer than someone on the west coast, but it's not someplace I would take a day trip to. About 3 1/2 hours away, last I knew.

Al, tell us when you'll be in DC. I'm an hour away and I can hop on a bus and get there for the day and meet with you. Others can come if you are here on Thursday or Friday. There is so much to see and I'm dying to get some shots of the WWII Memorial. Not Saturdays, though. Too much going on with my boys.

Stacie, not a problem. :)

For those in the US east coast, sometimes there are tickets for the UK, Heathrow for $199 round trip. You can get there through JFK or Dulles. I'm game for that, too! :)

Hey, Ron, who you kidding? I invited you to a meet this weekend a few hours from your house and you're not willing to do it.

And you want others to fly in from all over the world?

You need to make the first move, Mr. Costanza.:)

I'd do london, as it wouldn't cost me much more money, but there's just nothing of interest to me there. NYC is just more interesting to me.

As for you, Mark. Some birds aren't worth that few hundred dollars. A chance to stroll through the city and meet a bunch of POTNers is. If you don't want to come, ok. I'm going, though. :-) Me and my bald head will be there. ;-)

MDJAK

Oh, I never said I didn't want to come. I'll be there.

As far as wanting to meet some members, there will be at least four of us there and maybe more. Guess that's not enough for you.:)

BTW, what grade ND filter will I need to be sure your baldness doesn't blow out my shot when I take a picture of you?

If we do it this year, the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is magical in NYC. There are displays all over and the Empire State Building is lit in green & red, I think. The only problem is the crowds and the cold.

okay, guess I should go get one... just to have one more than anything... but i've always wanted to be 'going somewhere' didn't want to have an empty passport with no stamps.... and up til now my idea of travel is every state in the West.. and one week long trip to the East Coast... I generally drive. flying I discovered a couple of years back isn't my favorite.. I actually got fairly drunk the first plane I got on.. I just kept imagining all kinds of weird scenarios...

Whatever You do don't get drunk on a plane and behave like a danish top model did when she was on her way to a job in USA. She got arrested when she arrived, deported and have since been denied entry to USA - goodbye carreer.

But flying that long is a pain. I can't sleep and I get restless sitting in those tight seats.

London I can do - I could probably even do Copenhagen (My parents love copenhagen, so they'd probably send me there in a jiffy :D)

perhaps summer 2007. Whatever anyone says, winter in the UK is horrible - its cold, but not cold enough to snow, and it rains a lot. Spring and summer and the times you want to be there, perhaps also early autumn (fall).

Scotland - why not :D Hey...we could do a huge POTN tours the UK thing, and then do a tour of the US the next year. The great thing about the UK is you don't need to drive or fly anywhere - the train system can get you to all the major citys. and most of the towns and villages, and from there you can get busses to almost everywhere :D

Anyway...that sounds fun.

next summer would work for me.. enough time to get my L investment started and I could start budgeting in a very large scale vacation. and wherever we go I don't want to be traveling across the world to be rained or snowed on..

hey, suzie. I could fly into Virginia spend some time with my sisters and then maybe we could fly over together? and by together I mean, you could hold my hand and make sure I don't have an asthma attack. and there's the whole benifit of that way your not sitting next to somebody that smells, is much drunker than you, or has a life story and lots and lots of snapshots of the milwaukee mall taken with a cardboard camera (all of those things happened to me by the way)..

Neil, I never would have expected you or anyone else to want to meet me. I'm hardly "interesting". I'm hard to look at for any length of time, and hard to tolerate in general. Not funny, not interesting, and not all too polite (other than to women). But hey, I still like hanging out with those who will put up with me. ;-)

Don't worry...should this "event" be in the UK, I won't be there.

As I said (or tried to) it is already too late to plan something for this summer. You have to remember that travelling acros the globe is not exactly cheap, has to be planned with work etc. So if a meet were to be done this summer I would definately be out. Summer 2007 yes that would be a great idea.

hey ron, what's wrong with the UK? and were talking about a year away.. that's lots of time, even for me.. and i'm on the other side of the united states, let alone going to England. but, perhaps we could have a meet in New York City and then for those that want to go to England can go.. that way, If I go across the country it's for more than one meet... ;) ;) .
Hey, Tommy.. if I go across my country, and fly over an ocean.. you better go to England.. isn't it like a train ride for y'all.. a lot of the countries over there are half the size of my state.... just curious...

I can't think of a single thing in the UK that I'm "dying to shoot". I can think of a bunch of places in NYC or even the US in general that I'd love to get to. Now...if we were talking Italy, or maaaybe even France, I might jump on it. They have things I want to see. UK just has nothing for me. Oh tommy, don't get like that. I didn't mean because it wasn't in NYC I wouldn't be there. I just don't want to fly, especially over the ocean, and don't care for the UK anyway (as I said in my last post). I wasn't being "childish" or anything. I just don't fancy going to the UK. ron, I hate to fly too.. we can fly together.. I'll hold your hand, you'll tell me when I look blue.. we can both take turn taking pictures outside of the airplane window. we could get through it.. and if suzy's there she'll keep us both distracted..

what about taking three or four days and going to a few different places.. never been to Europe before (obviously) and if it's just train rides we can go to different places. But, I want to go to Portobello Rd. (spelling).. and Dave's neighborhood and see that graveyard he's always shooting..

Are You sure You know everything about UK to be able to say there is nothing You would want to see and photograph?

NYC or another major city in US, Los Angeles, San Diego or even somewhere in Canada definately make sense to me since most members are from US/Canada. But that also means that if members from Europe should have an oportunity to perticipate then we would be looking at summer 2007 not summer 2006.

that one isn't a problem.. I do. in fact I learned how to really drive in SD.. and if it's in San Diego I'd either drive down or take a plain.. but either way I could get my hands on a car without any trouble at all..
I will tell y'all up front. My father still makes noises about my driving...  .. but I haven't had a ticket in three years and the only wreck I got into was because of black ice (not my driving)...

Well, nothing I can think of, anyway. Make a list of things that you think are interesting, and I'd consider it. I just can't think of anything at all, really, that would make me want to make that trip. I'm sure it's a lovely place, but at this point, just not worth it in my mind. Plus, I wouldn't be able to stay for any real length of time, because of money. I can't imagine how much it would be to stay there for like a week, what with plane fare, lodgings, food, etc. Gotta be a couple thousand anyway, and that's just too much.

I really don't know UK that well but I am almost 100% sure that the UK members can come up with interesting things and places to see.

As for the cost. That is why it should take place next year. And the cost of going from Europe to US is probably the same or maybe higher so that issue is the same for us in Europe.

Besides the real interests occurs in the places that don't instantly come to mind.. the nooks and crannies of a location that hold it's history and give you a sense of the area... but to say that nothing comes to mind is all the more reason to go, atleast to me..

I'm not rich either. The income is there, but it all has places to go. I hardly ever have money for "fun". Over a year, I could probably save enough to go there for a week or two, but man...seems like an awful lot of money for that. I'd definitely have to see some other places to make it worth it. I'd take a day train trip to Italy, probably. Wanna go, Sari?

That might be a nice idea. Those that want to go to a couple other countries could plan the whole thing so we go as a group. I know I don't want to go alone. No way.

Virtually any country in the world affords photographic opportunities. Perhaps for ideological reasons, some places might get ruled out. NYC is an attractive travel destination for many, because it is a gateway and travel to and from gateway cities tends to be more reasonable than to other locales. On the down side, lodging in NYC is astronomical which tends to negate the travel savings. Perhaps with as many members as we have, we should just charter the "Freedom of the Seas" and have a floating meet.

I know many visitors have limitations on funds for lodging, but NYC has many places that are not 5 star hotels, not even a 2 star hotel, but are quite reasonable. My brother stayed in a 4 star hotel in the heart of China last month and he said the floors were totally dirty. Everyone has different standards for 2 stars and these places in NYC are quite acceptable. So, if you are interested, anyone interested, I can get some information. I'm staying in my sister's 2 star apartment. It's the size of my family room in VA. But it's free and I'm going there.

hmm...a day trip from London to italy - an interesting concept :D

Flights here are pretty cheap - I wouldn't fly within the UK, but you can fly from the UK to other major european citys often for less than £50 :D

As for accomadation - thats what youth hostels are for. Often very cheap, £30/night maximum (I'm not absolutely sure, but that would be an upper limit). Food can be cheap. TBH, once you get over here, it wouldn't be huge amount to actually stay here - I'm sure someone would lend you their spare room :D

hmm.. question about hostels? is that where there's bunk beds and a bunch of folks in one room? or just really teeny tiny private rooms? and I definately agree that it would have to be for more than one day... I'm thinking closer to a week but spent in a few different places... this could be exciting but it's going to take atleast a year to really organize, but if we name a date that will work for everyone if it's that far in advance we can arrange other things around it...

Oh I didn't mean that they'd book another person in the same room. I just meant that there's usually two beds. I stayed at a holiday in a couple weeks ago during a wedding. I didn't pay, the couple did; but I saw the bill. It was $130 each night. Nuts, I say. From what you're saying, I could get a decent hotel room for like 20 bucks. That's even more insane. If you booked these in advance on specific days yes , but realistically a bed and breckfast would be $50 and that would beva price of a cheap hotel , a decent hotel would be about the price you mentioned.

Namibia and Australia are the best countries to visit for photography, at least to me: lots and lots to see and experience, great people, not that pricey at all and an absolutely amazing variety of stuff to shoot ... wildlife, deserts, coast lines, people and town/city style, but you need a nice small, easy going but focused group of people to really enjoy it, no primadona's of either gender, and a reliable 4x4 or 4x2 ideally! I'm almost sure now to be heading off to one or the other again around April '07 for 3-6 months.

New York ... hmmm   doesn't quite appeal the same unless you like shopping for shoes and shooting taxi cabs and police. London is a much more target rich environment for shooters too if folks want a nice 'world hub' (worlds busiest airport after all) with lots of infrastructure! Can be reasonably priced if you're clever.

I shot that (well actually 249) with my S2 IS when I was in Prague for 4 days.

well yes, but that's a single city. We're talking a good 3-4 cities. Surely that wouldn't be enough. I just hate to be limited.

I know that. It was just to give You an idea. Multiply that with number of cities or days if You like.

I'll happily shoot 2 gigs in a day in my local area, shooting stuff I've lived next to for my whole life. In another city, I shoot way too much. Just to give you an idea, I shot 399 photos in Grange over Sands - a small town near the lake district.

their website (http://www.grange-over-sands.com/tourist.htm)

I did go walking - but I was only there for a weekend :D

Dave is just slow and steady with his shooting :D

lol...

I think we all know that he's just trying not to take too many photos before he goes back on some sort of safari - Dave is a bit odd with his safari obsessions...

My brother lived in London for 2 years and his favorite place to go was Prague. He loved Turkey, said the old buildings were amazing. My husband loved Paris, the streets were full of interesting characters. He also loved Australia, especially the seashore. I am smitten with NYC because I grew up there. For those who have never been there, it is true, lots of tourist traps. But the NYC I know is quite different. Take a walk into Chinatown or Little Italy. You can eat until you dropped for under $10. The art in the museums alone would be worth the trip. I stayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a whole day and didn't see 1/3 of it. They allow non-flash photography in there. The views from the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center on a clear day are enlightening. you can almost see forever. Every summer I attended Mets and Yankees games from the cheap seats with my Dad and that was really great. I ate dirty hot dogs and got sunburn. I watched the US Open Tennis matches at center court. I road the subways from Brooklyn to Manhattan and saw thousands of office buildings, apartment buildings with terrible, artful graffiti. Central Park is beautiful, Ground Zero is sobering, the United Nations is actually very art deco. The Statue of Liberty is grand, but you can't go up the statue anymore. Grand Central Station is huge.

My town. Sorry to ramble. :)

My town. Sorry to ramble. :)

Nothing wrong with it. I've traveled in... well, don't really know, but I would say about 60% of the world, but i must admit that NYC has a very special place in my heart. Probably because is where I've spent more time, and one of those places that I did not lived as a tourist. I still have a lot of friends that live in NYC, I have spent about one and a half year over there as a student at the Columbia and still today (our last visit was in 2002) i move around the city almost as a native does... so NYC is absolutely fine for me. But in spring/summer. The cold weather has always killed me. Probably is the reason because I went back home at the end (dunno really, that was about 25 years ago) :)

How about Florida ? There we would not have any climate related issue and is a place rich of photo opps.

Oh god. I hated florida when I was there. If we're going out of the country anyway, how about some place like Costa Rica? Well ok, maybe not that far. You get the idea, though. I hate the heat immensely, but if I'm gonna be in it, it's gonna be someplace nice.

It's not how many you take it's how many you keep as you know. How many you keep is about exposure and composure and having a discriminating eye. Shooting like a machine gun is based on fear you don't know what you're doing and will miss something.

Safari obsessions? ... that's funny kid. Some are happy to live in the same street they grew up in and work in a supermarket all their life. Cool for them ... doesn't suit me so I do something different. When you grow out of short pants you can make your own choice ;)

I shoot quite a bit.. but, i'm with Dave on packing the laptop.. quick downloads at the end of the day and i'd be good with 2 or 3G's worth of memory... but, I have a bad habit of almost never erasing shots in camera.. generally do it later.. so, if I actually chimp my shots and dump bad ones my memory would probably last a bit longer..

and no picking on Dave about his travels.. i'm jealous as hell of his being able to pack up and travel around Africa or Australia for six months...

There's an idea. It's a great way to visit several places without worrying about transportation or hotel reservations.

I think there are already photography cruises we can look at. I read about one that went to Alaska. On board the photographers had classes and shared interesting information and sponsors even came to pitch their products. Maybe we should do that, get a sponsor?
