From the same shooting session with the granddaughter. . . These were all candids (ie unposed & unplanned) and I had to take what I could get. They are both very good subjects.
I was trying to achieve a 'soft' look with this photo.
I am really unsure whether I succeeded or not. Is the coloring proper here?
Please give me your ideas for improvement. Thanks!

Great portrait. It seems as though the daughter got most of the soft focus effect here. I'm sure with the proper editing this could be a portfolio shot.

Though, the concept is nice, this is in the critique section, so some ideas.
Some good things, depth of field is nice, and colors are good.
As far as the soft focus, I am never againt it, but when only one person has a sort of soft focus, and the other dosent, it looks sort of odd.
Though it is candid, the focul points of the child and mother do not go together well, and makes it sort of akward.
This is where rapid shot is helpful, you can take a few in a row, and eyes will be ****fting heads moving, mouths moving, etc.

i have to agree that the mother and daughter having different focal points is distracting. also the softness on the daughter but not on the mother. you may want to do a wee bit of cropping or cloning on the bottom of the photo to delete the black spot on the shirt. actually, i may even crop tighter than that due to the rather unattractive look of the lopsided collar on the t-shirt of the mother.
i do like the lighting and the feeling that is conveyed in the subjects.

The depth of field on this shot was too narrow to catch both the young child and her mother. This puts the main emphasis on the mother, and the child is just background.
Another detractor is that both were looking in different directions.
The shot is a great one of the mom, (depth of field etc all work nice) but as a daughter-mom shot it does not work too well, as the daughter is out of focus.
Soft focus is not the same as slightly out of focus. Soft focus is still focused, but there is a radiance to the shot given by a stippled filter or by a simple defocus of the enlarger during a second exposure of the print. I am sure there is a photoshop method to do it too.
The lighting is very nice.
Great choice of lens!
