Folks -
Linear Sharpen 1 with 42 replies is too much ! It takes too long to see the latest reply.
Please just continue the discussion in this new thread, so we can all see it.
thanks.

A good idea, thanks.
I just placed LinearSharpen 1.02 to http://www.photography-on-the.net/D30/linear/
It fixed one bug in vr3 (I recall) and has now a usage descriptions by ISO, also I changed high ISO version USM (added level 3 threshold). It also has offers a chance to edit curve, levels and USM while running.
There's also one other tip. You can experiment a bit by removing Linear Profile and saturation steps from the action and then add saturation +40 and convert the result to normal nonlinear "LC New" profile. This gives more calm colors - might give a good version of some photos.

Hi Pekka, many thanks for Linear sharpen 1_02, (Linear Sharpen 1_01 with added flexibility!) I think Christmas has arrived again!
I've been using 1_01 for a while now with tremendous results. I always shoot RAW and use Breezebrowser to convert to 16-bit linear TIFF before using your superb action (and of course Fred's superb linear profile). 1_02 gives the same quality but like you say, allows a curves and USM tweak before it finishes which is very handy indeed.
Looking forward to 1_03 and maybe a split version allowing basic image retouching & resizing before the sharpening stage?
Thanks again
John

Do I need to delete the old one from my actions folder?
Can they co-exist? Re-name the old action "v1" and the new "V2", etc?

oops,
You can have as many versions of an action as you want. Pekka's actions already have different names so they will co-exist just fine. The new one won't overwrite the previous one.

If I understand the postings correctly, it appears that several people have had good success using the combination of Fred Miranda's Linear ICC profile with Pekka's LinearSharpen action.
I now have a 1D, and I am just starting to use RAW files. I have purchased Fred's 1D-LPBatch action. When working with RAW files from the 1D (not the D30), does it makes sense to use Pekka's LinearSharpen action along with Fred's action?
One other question. I have gotten used to using Nik Sharpener Pro on JPG files, which does a fine job of sharpening. Does it make more sense to continue using that program or is Pekka's LinearSharpen action better for converted RAW files?

No, the two actions LinearSharpen and LinearPRO do (more or less) the same thing. Fred's ICC profile is required for both. In my experience, there is not a huge difference between the results produced by the two actions. Though and Fred might not agree. :D
One key difference is that LinearPRO will run batches without requiring intervention, whereas LinearSharpen does not. Though I did manage to make LS run using files to store a standard set of levels adjustment.

nik Sharpener would be redundant since both LS and LP contain sharpening. However, you could run LP without sharpening and Pekka has his LinearAction that does not include sharpening. You could then use nik. I have the "baby" version of nik and I doubt bother with it as I'm happy with the sharpening from both LS and LP.

Roger
