View Full Version : When do you think the 5D will be replaced?

Eventually, I'd like to sell the XT and get a FF camera for wide/landscape/higher resolution shots than the N. I'd still keep the N for sports, walking around, extra reach bla bla bla.

I personally think, just my view, that the 5D is overpriced as I think it should be about $2000 to compete with the Nikon D200.

So I was wondering when the 5D is going to be replaced and how much the upgraded one will cost. I'm hoping it'll be like the 10D being replaced by 20D, mainly the reduction in price that occured.

If it costs less than $2000, I'd probably go for it. In terms of imaging and features, I think the 5D is just fine.

I think it will be replaced by something better either late fall or early next year. Canon can't let Nikon get the D200 out and not respond with something much better and costs around $2500. They are still tops in the market, but a lot of people have bought those D50's and D70's lately and once you start with a certain brand, you stay.

I think the upgrade will be more in lines to what the 30D is to 20D. Just a refinement of features and hopefully a better price. I think the IQ will stay about the same.

Personally, I don't think too many starting from Digicams to dslr's will go with a 5d as it's a $3000 camera.

I don't know for sure, but it sure would make sense to step the 1dsmk2 and 5d up to a Digic III processor. With that, perhaps a refined sensor for improved high ISO performance. Like you, I'm hoping they drop the price of the 5D and phase it out. If it was under 2k, I'd be all over it.

yeah, something tells me that since the 5D was announced Aug of 2005, it'll probably be August of 2006 or much more likely Aug of 2007 (two years into the lifecycle) that the 5D will be replaced, as they seem to be replacing the 30D and the Rebel series at the 18month interval. I suspect next up for update is the 1DsMark II in either N or the Mark III version with bigger LCD, picture style, bla bla, bla, then maybe the 5D's replacement with Digic III and so on.

I like the camera, I just balk at the price. It came out at $3299, then started to drop to about $2600 or so, then the rebate came on and it raised to about $2900, so really more like $2600 with the rebate. I just can't see how this should be twice the cost of the 30D, just for the sensor. I'm really hoping that the 5D's replacement will be under $2000, more like $1800 to compete with the D200, but who knows.

My guess would be at PMA next February if Canon sticks to the 18-month product cycle. Hard to say, really. :)

Yeah, I'm hoping for either of the two things. That when the 5D's replacement is announced, that It'll be a lot cheaper than the 5D (which I will then get) or that the 5D's price drops (in which case I'll get the 5D).

I'm not trolling here but I keep hearing that the 5D sales are flat, so I'm hoping that I can pick one up cheaper next year or so, although I didn't see too many used 5D's here or on eBay.

You've got to be kidding, the D200 ain't half the camera that the 5D is. Where do you buy your Liquor? As far as price, you just may be right, The 5D replacement should come out at about $2000.00. The D200 shouldn't be a penny over $1299.00 like the 40D and so should the D300. All Nikons D300 and above are overpriced. Its so because Nikoners allow themselves to be ripped off.
