I'm not sure from your question if you are talking about small auxillary units to be used as slaves or main flash units with batteries. If you are looking for a powerful flash unit that you mount to a flash bracket, has an external battery pack, and offers full E-TTL flash metering, then I suggest the Quantum Q Flash T2D. It has a guide number of 160 and virtually instantaneous recycle time.

looking for slave flashes that i can use for fill flash when outdoors, or for behind the bride when she's dancing with her husband.

Here are some. I use some of the Morris Brand (Midi Slave and Mini Slave Wide) to light corners of dark rooms and backgrounds.

We use Quantums a lot for backlighting a bride.

Things got confusing a few days ago. Picture this:

Bride in white gown on the left. Groom in black tux on the right. Videographer behind with his bright light on. Quantum flash behind getting ready (wireless control). The couple was kind of moving back and forth, so back lights seemed on and off.

There was a silver reflective edge on the bride's white veil. So when everything started popping, there was front light, back light, back tungsten light, reflections and all kinds of crap. It looked like the bride had a lightning bolt going past her. Tricky. Very tricky.

Ok, heres a thought, i think its creative but it probably wont do. want your thoughts..

I have been looking at portable flashes, the qflash setups like mentioned earlier and such. i find them way expensive, but thats ok. at those prices i could afford to buy 1 a year. couldnt one accomplish the same portable light setup for much cheaper doing this.

Purchase (1) APC UPS-ES
Purchase (1) Monolight kit with stand, umbrella etc.

then charge the ups, weighs about 8 pounds kinda heavy, then just plug your ac monolight into that?

its only running when charging correct. a ups should give you alot of shots i would think. anyone ever tried this?

Lead acid batteries in standard UPS supplies are very heavy. No way to mount a UPS to the light stand. UPS systems are not designed to hold a charge for long periods of time … primarily for short mains power failures. If you need an inexpensive setup, I would recommend the JTL 300 portable kit. 300 w/s, light-weight battery, and stand for less than $350 total. Good for about 150 flashes on a charge. Add a PocketWizard and your wireless portable flash system is ready to go….
