View Full Version : Gale force macros

We had strong to gale force winds this morning which makes macro shooting interesting. Lots of disadvantages to this but one big advantage is that bugs take almost no notice of you- they are too busy trying not to get blown away. :)

New hoverfly for me hanging on for grim death- legs like Xylota segnis but seemed to have the wrong colouring- ID'd as Syritta pipiens

Great work, as usual. Flies are definitely your forte! More bad weather forecast for the weekend unfortunately.

Lovely shots Brian, especially more so for the conditions that they were taken in. How do you manage to take shots in gale force winds?

How do you get these kind of shots of bugs on plants when the wind is blowing so hard? A little breeze is usually enough to discourage me :(

I love the damp miner bee, looks like it rained too. The leg on that hoverfly is something else!

Thanks Jerry - yes all with the MPE-65. Did wonder about the holly blue egg laying from the abdomen posture but assumed it would only do that on holly. It's on a Thuja cedar conifer- I've taken more bug pics on this smallish tree than any other plant in my garden :)

Thanks for the comments all :)
Must admit I wasn't going to try taking pics but got bored cataloging my old shots. Some of the shots were on solid surfaces so that wasn't a problem. With the others I either waited for a lull in the wind or on several of them I shot one handed and held the leaf the bug was on with the other. As I mentioned they really do not take much notice of you in the wind. At least the light was good :)

Amazing shots of these insects. The detail of the eyes in second shot captured my attention.

Thanks Yacine,

I'd love to get a closeup of bee's eyes but they are a lot more timid than the flies- still you never know :)

The fly eye shots are not too hard with the right lens- they let you get really close as long as you are careful.

You can see the ocelli on their little heads in a couple of these. I ususally look for them first off in most insect head shots. I particularly like the last image. That guy looks like he is really laying low and hanging on. Great images.:D

Don't let me put you off- you should see the shots I was taking this time last year, but it was posting on forums like this that I got guidance on how to improve :)

Most of them have the eye facets showing in the originals- often gets lost on re-sizing unless I post a crop.
