Can anyone recommend a good link to an explanation of the histogram and how to interpret/use it to improve/expand one's photographic horizons?

I've gleaned information here and there, but I really need something to tie it all together.

Thanks

Thanks Pekka, that explained much. I do have another question. Okay, I understand that the histogram covers approximately 5 stops and that to the left is darker, middle is mid tones, and to the right are the highlights.

My question concerns the "peaks" or the vertical height. Would this be considered to be pixel saturation at the given stop area? or what *exactly* do higher peaks represent as compared to lower peaks?

Here's a pointer to another histogram tutorial that I think answers your question.

Hope it helps

THanks Jim,

Yes, it is another great tutorial. After looking over it for the past day, I would consider it a *must read* for anyone wanting to take their knowledge up a level.
