I plan on buying a Rebel XT and taking it to Iraq with me in a couple months. My question is; if you could take only one lense with you what would it be? I am totally new with SLR cameras and have no idea what to get. I imagion I will be taking pictures of people working to general lanscape to what ever pops up. What lense can has a fairly good zoom but be friendly enough to take picture for people close to you?

these dont cover the wide end... but if you want range take a look at the 24-105L IS and the 28-135IS, for wide maybe the 17-85 if its more landscape orientated...

What do you think about the 28-200mm F3.5-5.6 DG MACRO? I honestly don't understand all the numbers and just read what the Stigma sight said. again the intent is Action (Gun Fire), Portait (soldiers day to day life) and landscape (Blown up things)

Yeah and maybe watch what you spend just because of the sand over there. I recently had the chance to deploy but my unit would not release me. I volunteered and all... guess that's what happens when I do a dang good job, they wont let me go with another unit LOL.
It's only a matter of time before I end up going and you bet I will take my Rebel XT with me. That is probably plenty of camera to get the job done. As far as lenses go, I would have purchased the 70-200 f/4 and took my nifty fifty. I dont really think any others would be needed unless you wanted something wide.
Good luck and stay safe. I wish you the best bud.
