At first I accidentally set the shutter speed too low and got motion blur but once I noticed it I left it as it was as I found I like the slight blur around the edges.. gives it a bit more of an "action" feel. The flash makes it look as though I've cut him out and plonked him in the image, though, which I haven't :p Also an effect I don't mind, though. Opinions?

it does look like he's been imposed in the image but at the same time i like the effect

Thanks for the comment.. I'm glad to see someone else doesn't mind the effect :) While I wouldn't want all my photos to look like I've stuck the subject on top of them I still think it's alright in these :)

yeah I think it looks great. be interesting to try 2nd curtain with a slow shutter on these shots too, did you try that? be interested to see what they came out like.
looks like you were shooting with a fairly small aperture too, good idea, instinct would be to open up but its nice to have some background in there :)

that 2nd one's really nice. if you use a 2nd flash to the left, it should allow you to shoot at a slower shutter speed so to brighten up the background. just find the f. where the flash freezes him and not the shutter, and you can use any shutter speed you like. i really like this photo tho, do you shoot riding often?

These are quite good...

If you shot in RAW, you could try HDR to brighten up the back ground. In the future try softening the flasha touch to lighten up the background as mentioned.

Although I like the gloomy seashore look...only people who didn't grow up around it will dislike it.
