Hi

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a D30 and want to buy a side mounted flash. Can anyone advise me on the type of flash that would be suitable for the camera. I am finding it almost impossible to gt this information from anywhere and would really appreciate some guidance.

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean, a side-mounted flash?

Most wedding photographers use something like a D30, D60, or 10D, and mount it on a flash bracket (that is the thing with the handle). Then the flash unit mounts on the side of the flash bracket beyond the handle.

On most brands, if you flip your camera to vertical format, then the flash unit will flip out on the end of the flash bracket so that the flash unit has the correct orientation.

Bob Gross,

You captured my interest, do you have a recommendation (type, part number, manufacturer, average cost) for the flash bracket -- like lets say for a 550EX?

Thanks.

Go down to your friendly photo store that caters to professionals, since a flash bracket is the sort of thing that consumers never fool with. Stroboframe and Stratos are very similar. One difference is the ease or difficulty that they can be switched from horizontal format to vertical format. If your camera is horizontal, then you want the flash out in horizontal format, and when you twist around to vertical, you want the flash to twist around to vertical. On some, it can be done with a well-trained flip of wrist action. On others, you must move the flash end by hand, since it is stiffer.

Some shooters like the speed of the former, and I prefer the stiffness of the latter. I don't like it flopping around except when I move it. Once you spend about eight hours on one wedding day with it, you will appreciate the balance of the camera and the flash on a good bracket.
