I use the 50mm f/1.4 Canon Lens. It works fine and is a good lens to leave on the camera for a quick shot. Some on this board will tell you it's not worth the price difference over the 1.8.

I just ordered this lens today (used, but almost nothing), including a polarizing-filter. Got it (including the filter) about $100 under the cheapest place I found it in Norway. It's delivered in the original box, and the seller says it's brand new, and almost not used at all.
Haven't got my 10D yet (won't get it for at least a month), but I couldn't let this offer pass, and it would suck so utterly not to have an objective to start shooting straight away when the camera finally arrive =)
Read a lot of good about this lens though. Also heard both that it's not worth the price-difference from f/1.8, but also a lot of people/tests that tell it is. I've seen a lot of tests of those two compared (on norwegian sites mostly), and from their testshots, the 1.4 got sharper pictures. If it's worth the price-difference.. Guess that depends on how deep the pockets are ;)

Just ordered the 50mm 1.8 from B&H Photo for $65 + $4.45 shipping. Now that is a great price for a Prime lens.

I've got the 1.4 and am very happy with it. It's very sharp and great for indoors. The 1.8 didn't sound like it was nearly as well constructed as the 1.4 and not as good optically so I didn't even consider it.

The current 1.8 Mk II is optically an excellent performer and not that far behind the 1.4. There are differences in the bokeh and out-of-focus highlights. The 1.8 is easily regarded as the best bang-for-the-buck lens.
The 1.4 has much better build quality, not to mention a distance scale, full-time manual (FTM) focusing, and a metal mount.
The discontinued Mk I should also be considered. Unlike the Mk II, the Mk I has a metal mount and a distance scale, but no FTM. Excellent to mint condition items seem to be going for $80-120, making it an excellent and much cheaper alternative to the 1.4.

I just posted some pics of my son...all taken with 10d and 50 1.4.

They aren't works of art, just some quick snapshots. You can see what the lens can do...Nice color, and soft backgrounds.
Best of luck,

I just ran some tests of my Canon 50mm f1.4 vs. a recent Leica 50mm f2 Summicron on my 10D. The Leica lens was on a Novoflex adapter which allows infinity focusing. The results were close but the Canon was definitely sharper at all apertures. I was surprised - and disappointed after paying US $175 for the adapter. But then it is nice to know the Canon lens is that good. Incidentally, once the Leica lens is on the Novoflex it won't come off - ever. Novoflex says it will come off but they are wrong.

When other f1.4 lenses cost more than $1000 or $2000, why complain about the price of this lens?
