Hello all,

A couple of questions on which I would appreciate your input:

1. Negative space - would you crop it out or do you like the water he is about to tackle in the shot?

2. Colour or B&W ? I think both have their place depending on the requirement but am interested in your views.

Thanks

Steve

In this case, I'd keep the negative space because it does a good job of setting the context. It's not a highly emotive scene where we need to come in tight on his expression, and the boat isn't doing any trick that needs to be the focus of the attention. If it was peak action, then yeah, come in tight.

Because he's moving away from us, I think the negative space helps tell the story of what he's moving into.

I like the colour of the kayak but not that of the water. Therefore I prefer the B&W version. However, there is little tonal seperation between the kayak, helmet and white water. I made some adjustments using channel mixer to increase tones. Hope you don't mind.

I like the color, and am a tight cropper by nature, but in this case I would like to see the water as it is part of the action. Kinda like seeing the ball the batter is trying to hit.

I would like a better action shot though, like maybe the kayaker negotiating a hard water flow...

OH, and a small series of shots with one or two showing his eyes or his facial expressions...

Thats just me, take it exactly for what you paid for it...LOL
