I have the same kit lens, and I bet thats most of the problem. I have NO LUCK with any action or distance shots with it.

You can see what I now have, and mostly for action I use my 70-200 2.8 or if I am indoors or closer up I use my 85 1.8

If you're planning on shooting sports frequently, consider not only a different lens but also using the manual exposure controls to give you greater control over shutter and aperture. When shooting sports, you need to get closer, capture peak action, and show facial expressions. If you shoot ball games, make sure the ball is in the frame. Read other threads in the sports forum, too. You'll pick up a lot of valuable information.

i like the composition of the first one. does seem oof. the others, there's too much track and not enough action.

as a relative newbie to sports photography myself, superdiver and liza are giving good advice. you'll want a faster lens. f2.8 or better.

I was hoping to crop realizing I didn't have enough zoom. But the pics when magnified seem OOF, and I'm not sure why. The shutter speed seems fast enough, I can always bump the ISO to 200 or even 400 to get a faster shutterspeed. I realize I need to get more of a zoom, but can any one tell me if my other assumptions are off base?
Shooting outside plenty of light, fast enough shutter speed, lens stop down into seet spot. Shouldn't I be able to just crop and get better than this?

TIA,

Ok just realized the shutter speed is no where near fast enough on the running pics.

you have to make sure that you are focusing on the subject, in those pictures it looked(to me) that you may have focused on the backround, which would throw off your shutter speed and make the girls blurry and over/under (in this case over) exposed. I have the same set up as you and i find it wors okay. also, i think that for action shots you shutterspeeds should be at least 250, probably more.
