POTN G-Series Challenge #68 National Symbols~WINNERS

1st Place-Sara ~ US Cemetery (Normandy, France)
I'm sure this cemetery was quite emotional and thought-provoking to visit and your photo certainly evokes both of those elements. I really like how the main cross, outlined by the sky, juts out of the bottom of the frame and demands attention. Powerful image, well done.

2nd Place-3Dart ~ Miles Per Gallon
With the dishonorable distinction of being the world's largest oil consumer, America is home to huge vehicles, wide open spaces, and never-ending highways. You captured all three in one photo - congrats! The steering wheel at the bottom of the frame and the perfectly postioned diesel makes this potentially average photo, great.

3rd Place-KC Jewel ~ Welcome to Ensenada
Flags are probably one of the most recognizable national symbols and this is one impressive flag. First, I'm not a big fan of centering main subjects but I think it works quite well in this shot. The blue sky, generous wind, interesting boats in the foreground, and scenic mountains in the distance makes this shot special, not to mention that beautiful Mexican flag. You've done your southern neighbors proud, KC Jewel.

I apologize for not being able to comment on each of your photos. It's bedtime here and I have a 14 hour day ahead of me. I will add a few more comments later in the week. I truly enjoyed the wide ranging photos. Sara, it's your turn.

POTN G-Series Challenge #68 National Symbols

Each country has something which we identify it with. In effect, we use these symbols to help differentiate from other countries and in many cases, they help instill a sense of national awareness. It could be a well known monument, food, a famous export, a clothing style, an aspect of the country's heritage, etc. Of course, it doesn't have to be your own country. More importantly, I'll especially be looking for creative interpretations of the theme. And before you begin searching through your hard drives for that perfect photo of the Great Wall of China that you took back in 2001, I strongly urge you to take time out and at least try to take a fresh photo. Even if it doesn't turn out to be the photo you submit, you'll be a better photographer for having tried. Best of luck to you all - see you next Monday. Brandon

Congratulations sara, 3Dart and KC Jewel. Your pictures are clever interpretations of an interesting theme (thanks, in Japan). I think that the Mexican flag is the biggest I had ever seen.

Boutty you made me think that Captain Cook is hidden behind his own portrait :) .

My picture was a last minute effort to return to the challenges. Hope to find a better example of the madness around the Soccer World Championship. The T shirts celebrates the classification of Ecuador with other 31 countries to the contest in Germany (Alemania) and the bags in the bottom of the picture resembles the flags of England, Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Argentina and Spain, all classified countries to the last games of the Soccer World Championship in Germany.

I also liked BottomBracket composition and marie’s Round Tower in Glendalough.

Congrats to sara, 3Dart and KC Jewel for the well deserved top spots!

Great topic Brandon (in Japan)! It invited so many interesting entries too! Each has it's own interesting stories behind it I could see! Execellent job and nice comments as usual. It would have been hard for me to pick the winners for this week.

rafael (rpolitsr), is that your tips for the teams ( England, Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Argentina and Spain) to get to the final this world cup? ;) I shall put $5 on each team? I might put an extra $5 for Ecuador I think! Thanks for your comment, I am at work right now, I will reveal the person behind the portrait tonight for you.

Boutty, don’t blame me if you lose your money!
I know nothing about Soccer. It was just the T shirt Store Display.
Of course, I am pushing for my country’s team, but we must get at least second place in GROUP A (Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany and Poland) to continue. As the World Championship is in Germany, I guess we got a hard group. Go Ecuador!

I am waiting for you to unveil the face behind the portrait!

Oh...wow! Wasn't quite expecting that. It's an honour and it feels good that someone has confirmed what I "thought" was a good shot. I found it difficult to get a good shot in such a photographed and "photographable" place. So to be honest, I was quite happy once I captured this one and saw it on the screen. You are right in Japan, it was a very emotional place to be. In fact that whole day was. I went on a whirlwind tour of western Europe, visiting 5 countries in 2 weeks! (I was there last week of April/first week of May). That day we went on a great day-long tour of D-Day sights. We did a half day Canadian tour and half American. It was so informative and of course very impactful, better than any history class. :)

Congrats to fellow placers 3Dart and KC Jewel. And Boutty I love your shot! I thought this was a great topic for the challenge-so thumbs up to you in Japan.

I'm going to sleep now, but will post a new challenge tomorrow morning. I'll have to come up with one first!!

LoL! Me too, don't know much about soccer, but I love watching World cup when I have a chance. The Aussie team is also in group F playing against Japan, Croatia & Brazil - We have to play extreamly well to get through this round. Hopefully, with the confidence we got from beating the visiting Greece team in Melbourne last week, we will do well in group F. ;)

PS. It's ten more days (http://www.theworldgame.com.au/home/)to go! I have download this (http://www.theworldgame.com.au/worldcup/2006WC_WallChart.pdf)to quide me setting my alarm ready to watch the match! :)

Sorry Brandon for hijacking this thread to talk about football (I meant soccer...)

sara, I think that would be an awesome place to be at night to practice painting-with-light technique! And for myself, I would need a few friends there with me. (I am afraid of ghosts... ) Oh glad that you liked my pic.

That's a great idea! I would have to bring friends too.

Can you tell us more about your shot? Was it just someone on the street? advertising for a museum or something like that??

Don't sweat it, Boutty. It's all related to rpolitsr's shot and sara's new topic! ;) And I think it's all right to call it football, this is an international forum and the majority of the world does refer to the sport as football.

Boutty, thanks for sharing the photo showing the man behind the picture. (that's a confusing sentence) I really liked your original shot. Very clever interpretation of the theme. Excellent candid.

Rpolitsr, are you sure you're from Ecuador? I thought everyone from Ecuador knew everything about their national football team. :)

I liked your photo as well, rpolitsr. I'm sure you'll have many more opportunities to capture the football madness in the upcoming weeks. Go Ecuador!

Rpolitsr, are you sure you're from Ecuador? I thought everyone from Ecuador knew everything about their national football team. :)

Yes, I am from Ecuador. And it is also true that I do not know about fútbol / football / soccer, but do not worry, I have brothers, sisters, sons, nephews, nieces and a lot of friends that keep me informed, and I will be in front of the TV set watching the games many times before the end of the World Championship. :)

Thanks again for a most interesting theme in Japan. What image would you have submitted if you are allowed?

rpolitsr, I think the latter is right; if you look carefully behind the man's blue coat, there was the reflection of captain cook in the mirror. ;)

Can you tell us more about your shot? Was it just someone on the street? advertising for a museum or something like that??
Now sara, your guess is as good as mine, I saw this chap carried the heavy portrait back and fort posting a small group of video/film crew!?! I was lucky to get some shots as there were 3 - 4 takes! ;)

Good question, Boutty. Any time that I've judged a chellenge I've asked myself that question and this time was no different. I honestly don't know, perhaps I'd take a photo of a pachinko parlour, some ornate looking food, or the red tori gate on the island of Miyajima (45 minutes from my home). Thanks again for showing the behind the scenes look at your photo Boutty. Great story, too.
