I'm an old Canon A-1 user (28mm 3.5 FD, 50mm 1.8 FD, & Vivitar 70-210mm 2.8 macro zoom) who has since gone through 4-5 Olympus digital cameras and now want to move up to a digital SLR. After lots of research, I believe that the Canon EOS 10D would be my best choice.
The problem I am having is my lens selection. I am thinking that it would be nice to start with two zoom lenses for the 10D. A 28-135mm 3.5 IS and either a 70-200mm 2.8 L IS or a 100-400mm 4.5 L IS. Are these good choices for general photography (stills, portaits, sports, landscape, etc.)? Should I look at an ultra wide zoom such as the 17-40mm 4 L because of the 1.6 factor?
I appreciate any help you can give me.

If you were to choose only 2 zooms for general purpose and use them for a few years, you can get 24-70mm L and 70-200mm L IS.
An ultra wide zoom would be useful if you take pictures of large buildings. 100-400mm L would be handy if you go to many sport events.

First off, think about what you want to or going to shoot more of, landscapes, sports, or just everyday photo's.
Are you considering yourself as a hobbist? Do you plan on becoming a Pro? Answering these questions can save $$$$.
Even though I have not purchased one yet due to I can't unload my Sigma's or Tamrons, I hear the 28-135 IS is a great all around lens.
For wide angle zooms I recommend the 17-40mm f/4, Igot mines a week or to ago and its great for close quarters.
If your not doing pro work & enjoy sports I would purchase the 70-200mm f/4 it will save you @ least $400.00 and you only lose one stop which you can make up for when you set your ISO.
Again this is just a recommendation from all of the data I've put together in the last 5 months. everyone has a different way of looking @ things and my short commings is usally buying cheap or more than what I needed in the past. Within the next week I will have the 70-200 f/4 and a 1.4x extender and that will complete my system. Generally I consider myself as a high end hobbiest.
Good luck

I have gone with the following for my 10D and it is perfect for everything I do:
Sigma 17-35 2.8 EX HSM - Landscapes, buildings etc.
Sigma 28-300 3.5 - Zoom work, but also for snaps.
I think if I started to do sports events I would probably go with a fast 400 IS lens, but for now, I have everything covered and the two lenses came to £550 (UK Sterling).

Hi,
in my oppinion, if you can afford it start with "L" glas from canon. Because all future bodys will come with more and more pixels. Then your glas will soon be the quality limiting factor.
If you can afford it, then go for the 24-70/2.8 and for the 70-200/2.8 to start with.
Later if you need more telephoto range you can decide to buy another lens or a converter (2*) that gives you the 400.
At the lower end it depends on your willingness to spend more or less money (16-35/2.8 or 17-40/4.0). I use the 16-35 and I am very happy with it.

Yeah, chip prices have come down and they will come down more. Every year (maybe every other year) new digital cameras will double the pixels at the same price. But 20MB will beat even medium and large format cameras.
So, folks, invest in lenses. They are like houses. Their value go up over time. Cameras are like cars. No. They go down much faster than cars over time.
It is not a question of if or whether the medium and large formats will bite the dust. It is a question of when. Who will remember what I said here 3 years later? But People would surely see a sweeping change in the camera market.

Thanks for the info. I had a little sticker shock when I priced the L lenses! However, I agree that they are the best for this camera. I'll probably start out with the 24-70 2.8 L.
Humm, now where did the kids put their piggy bank?
