Hi

I'm a bit of a rookie photographer and am about to buy a Canon G5 to replace the S30 I lost in an accident.

I have been researching the g5 and the only real concern I have is using 58 mm add on lenses.

Apparently it is best only to use 52 mm lenses to avoid shadows and interference.

Can somebody point me to literature that explains in simple terms what lenses, adapters and step up rings etc to buy to achieve the best results

The Lensmate is considered to be one of the better adapters for accessory lenes and filters. They have a web page showing some of the interference you can expect:

I use a 52mm on the camera all the time with a UV filter and I use the 58mm with all other accessories. I hardly ever use the viewfinder, so obstructing it isn't a problem for me, and the larger accessories (like the telephoto lens) are usually used outdoors, when flash isn't necessary, so shadows aren't an issue.

Actually, the shadow issue is moot, since I also use a 420EX flash on the hotshoe.

Hi Dave

Many thanks for these useful pointers.
It all seems very logical now and the Lensmate comparisons were useful.

The Lensmate adapters made of alumin(i)um look very good - unfortunately I live in the UK and may have to make do with the plastic ones marketed by Canon.

However, I now understand the technical aspects !
