I have searched this forum and not found an answer so I hope this is a new question!

I have been reading various threads including one about the AF on lenses with IS and one comment was to try upgrading to 1.0.2.2 ( I think).

While shooting sport (rugby) I have had only the common problems of a little bit of hunting and sometimes the AF picking the wrong subject to focus on. Manual focus is difficult for me becuase of poor eyesight!!

Anyway, cutting a long story short, I decided to check my firmware level and found I am still on 1.01. As the latest level appears to be 1.0.2.2 can anyone tell me please, can I go straight from 1.01 to 1.0.2.2 or do I have to go through the earlier upgrades in sequence.

Many thanks in advance,

Rod

ps Happy New Year!

Rod,

It is my understand you can go straight to 1.0.2.2. The firmware upgrade essentially overwrites what is already there.

Roger

Rod,

You can go directly to the latest version. As Roger mentioned the upgrade writes over the previous version.

I have no way of objectively measuring the improvement, but I use my 28-135 IS about 90% of the time and I have noticed a significant improvement with AF, specially in poor light conditions.

I recommend the upgrade.

Where can I find the firmware upgrade. Searching the canon site only finds 1.0.2.0 - not 2.2?
Thank you

Will this upgrade help me with 70-200 f2.8L shooting rugby in low light ( poor floodlights), The shutter lag is a bit different to my 1V.

Roy,

I havo no experience with the 70-200 but I presume that whatever was done to the firmware will have the same impact regardless of the lens in use.

I have upgraded to 1.0.2.2 directly from the version that came with my D30 and I am very pleased with it.

I recommend the upgrade.

Persio.

not to be paranoid or anything,

but
WHY doesn't canon offer this upgrade as it does the others?

Has anyone in addition to Kelly done actual "before-and-after" experiments?

Sorry, but "pleased with it" doesn't really help understand if there is a difference here.......

I was lazy and just did the upgrade, and can't tell if there is a real difference....

There is a huge thread addressing this over at dpreview.com, some people have done controlled experiments, for example with a wide lens, http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=2016708

For myself, I was using the 70-200/2.8L just yesterday with my D30 and I just upgraded to the 1.0.2.2 firmware. To be frank I can't tell any difference, the autofocus was very fast before (eg. 1/4 second), in modest light with this lens, and it is exactly the same now in the same light. (that was a quick indoor test; most of my shooting yestday was in the sunshine: http://www.bealecorner.net/D30/011202/ )

I just got my Canon back from the factory sevice and they installed the v1.0.2.2 firmware on it. So it is obviously official

OK, I'm stumped!

Remember the old days, say 6 months ago, when Canon released a G1 update claiming to have improved a very minor part of the G1 operation? The DpReview posts after the release made one forget what the original "fix" was all about in the first place. We even had Elvis imposed as a histogram on some user's images.:O

My 28-135IS does function better in low light, IMHO, but Canon never said it should. I havn't seen Elvis but my arthritis medication tastes a lot like sugar lately. Could there be a connection?
