View Full Version : Burmese monk - and 1k post

It's time for my first thousand post.

The first 999 have been a great virtual journey, with excellent guides and fellow passangers, lasting about nine months.

I have posted close to 300 pictures in about 150 threads in 19 Forums (out of 33). Some of the 130 threads I've started have inspired lot of replies, some have been totally ignored - and that is something which is hard to predict. I probably would have participated to some of the discussions a bit more lively, but the handicap of not beeing a native English speaker is some sort of hindrance, so I have concentrated on photos.

I have spent most of my time in Travel & Landscapes, Nature & Animals, Urban Life and People forums, having some sidetracks in Still Life, B/W & Experimental, Transportation and General Chat forums. I have tried to avoid (but not always succeeded) short replies ("Nice!"), but to give a bit more content to my comments. Still, getting these one word comments is not bad at all.

This journey has been a great ego-booster and eye-opener at the same time. The positive critisism and witty comments from you fellow members is something I can not get anywhere else.

Among all the members who have given their feedback, I like to give a special thanks to the following members. They have been contributed more time than average to share toughts with us in several of my threads. (Have I missed somebody? Most probably, and I apologize that already now.) They are in alphabetical order:

Alan (ajbalazic)
Balliolman
Becca (BeccaNH)
Dave (condyk)
David (superdiver)
Dennis (dancinec)
Dimitri (dv2004)
John (rudgej)
Marie (marie)
Mills
Maureen (Maureen Souza)
Sandy (stoneylonesome)
Scottie (Buggbairn)
Stan (sparker1)
Wu (wu_wei0)

Then to the picture I like to share with you at this festive occation. It has been taken in Burma (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/myanmar)(now called as Myanmar) in Taunggyi (http://www.myanmartravelinformation.com/mti-inle/taunggyi.htm), September 1987. This buddhist monk was coming out from the stupa (temple) (http://www.seasite.niu.edu/burmese/cooler/Chapter_3/Part2/pagan_period_2.htm), which are originating from the Pagan period (11th to 14th centuries).

I was then carrying A-1 (http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/f_camera.html) (a great camera I still have but not use) with most probably Tamron 80-200 zoom.

This picture is one of my all time favorites, showing one detail of the beauty of a place which is not that familiar for most of us. Hope you enjoy it as well.

Thanks all!

 Gotcha !! ;)

Congrats on the 1000th post matey.

I remember when I 1st joined the forum you had a shot through the trees that gave the branches a mosaic look, I've followed and admired your shots ever since.

Well done Olli and keep up the good work :)

That's a lovely photo and heartfelt 1000th post Olli. What hotel balcony was it taken from? ;) Many thanks too for the personal mention.

Congrats on your 1000th post!
I don't visit POTN as dedicatedly as I have in the past for a number of reasons, however your work is one of the two or three that I search for. It never ceases to delight me. This one is no exception and is another one I would easily hang in my home. The "restricted tonal range" (not sure how to phrase this) gives it such a peaceful feeling and is essential to the feel of the piece.

best to you- ~wu

(sorry- had to edit. My keyboard stopped working so came to the office to fix the post!)

Cheers to Olli! A great image to celebrate your 1k post- a fine example of all the elements of good photography- line, shape, texture, color's and tones- all working in harmony here. I'm most impressed with the exposure (then again, it was film so the exposure latitude was a lot more forgiving ;))

Congrats Olli on the 1000 posts. As far as your English goes it is in my opinion a lot better than some Native English speakers, I am amazed at how well people from none english speaking countries do, and ashamed at myself for speaking only english. Your photo you posted is really nice, and I do like the sepia tone to it. Nice job.

Congratulations olli on your 1000th post and a good image to go with it. And congrats to your Country winning the Eurovision song contest too.

Hope your two dogs (the Black and White)are behaving themselves of late, I remember them in one of the posts.

A lovely photograph indeed, Olli, your subject appears quite unbothered and natural and the framing device of the doorway works well. Congratulations on your Seniority. I agree with you, POTN is a nice community of like-minded people! :D

 Gotcha !! ;)

I remember when I 1st joined the forum you had a shot through the trees that gave the branches a mosaic lookThanks Scottie. That thread you are referring was one of the surprises for me, it's amont the top 5 of most replied.

What hotel balcony was it taken from? ;) Many thanks too for the personal mention. :cool:My pleasure, John. Frankly, can't remember anymore the hotel in Tanggyi ;) but what I remember from there was the four soldiers as my bodyguard to make sure I got safely to the train and back to Rangoon (now Yangoon), where I by accident met another foreigner who was in the very same train and stayed in the same Hotel Strand (http://www.myanmar-tourism.com/strand.htm), and he told me he believed I was an arrested criminal.

... is another one I would easily hang in my home. The "restricted tonal range" (not sure how to phrase this) gives it such a peaceful feeling and is essential to the feel of the piece.Wu, your words and analysis are always a delight for me. Peace is exactly the the feeling I get from this picure as well.

I'm most impressed with the exposure (then again, it was film so the exposure latitude was a lot more forgiving ;))Alan, you make a valid note. Digital images can not (yet) beat the best slides. Is it like the difference between vinyl and cd records?

I am amazed at how well people from none english speaking countries do, and ashamed at myself for speaking only english.Sandy, luckily we have one common language. Just imaging, if the only thing we could use for communication in this Forums would be smilies ... :D:D

An excellent image to reach this milestone :grin:Thanks Trevor for your kind words.

Congratulations ... becoming a Senior ...!Thanks Suedezu. About the time, isn't it ;);).

And congrats to your Country winning the Eurovision song contest too.

Hope your two dogs (the Black and White)are behaving themselves of late, I remember them in one of the posts.Tony, that victory was amaizing, wasn't it!:shock: (Some pictures here (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=154073).) And our dogs are well, though getting a bit old - both are 12 years now. Thanks for remembering.

... your subject appears quite unbothered and natural and the framing device of the doorway works well. I agree with you, POTN is a nice community of like-minded people! :grin:Balliolman, if I just remember right he did not notice anything, I was just in the right place at the right time. And here I enjoy being among the 'like-minders'!

That is a great shot Olli and congratulations on your 1k post!

It took me a lot longer to get there.

I just met one someone from Finland last night actually! She's in the States visiting my brother in law for a couple of weeks. We're having a BBQ this weekend, then taking her to a baseball game next week before they leave to go sight seeing.

Thanks for the honourable mention kid ... I always check out your shots if I see them because they usually have a unique perspective and humour that is all too rare. Congrats on the 1000th and also for being Finnish. I think you guys are all a bit bonkers due to lack of sunlight and that is a quality I very much like ;-)

I am all set for the BBQ thread! We need to coax Carzee in to providing a picture of mashed potatoes on the grill! If there isn't one after this weekend I'll get it started. :D

I PM Carzee immediately and warn him. -- The weather here in Finland is right now not the best for BBQ (raining and windy) but I promise to add some shot later as well.
