what profession are YOU? i wanted to know how many people that use this forum are actually photographers by trade. I am not. For me it is just a hobby. I also posted more options for people that that I think are either going to be using a camera (i.e. graphic designers..), or those that just will be in a position to 'browse' the internet a lot (IT workers ;) ) I hope it generates some discussions and interesting results...

I am a pro photographer, for over 18 years, not full-time, cause I choose to be part-time. As I like to teach photography at a local Art school and I do graphic design aswell. I don't want to burn out on one thing, so I have many jobs all related to photography. But I pick my own hours and length of job.

These days I am mainly a freelance business planning, business development, business process and training consultant, which is nice, but now and again I will take on an extended contract to project manage some big initiative or other, which is what I am doing now and will be up until April 2007.
I do this stuff because I like to travel and I don't need to worry about 'career'. I get well paid and can take long periods of time off. I was previously a CEO a couple of times and a Director a couple of times with different charities, as well as a social work, which sucked, a community development coordinator, a factory worker, etc.
I paid my dues

Draftsman. Pretty much, anyway. I design piping systems for power plants. Fun stuff. (is that snoring?) Although the pay isn't too bad, it's not exactly grip your seat and hold on type work.
Used to design tooling for a foundry...molds for little cast iron conduit parts. More excitement, eh? Actually, it was a fun job. All the design was done in 3D, and I got to do programming for a very large 5-axis mill. It's pretty neat watching a machine articulate around a hunk of steel and sculpt the shapes you told it to.
Before that I used to do blueprints for houses. Designing houses was fun too and that job was actually the old-timey(now anyway) ink on velum (not mylar!) drafting. I actually miss drawing by hand. Spending an entire day reeking of ammonia from running prints all day is great...I think my sinuses were burnt up and didn't work for a few years. Before that I did store layouts for grocery stores.
And now I'm pursuing a career in photography....the connection from drafting to photography is vague, but so far so good!

I work as a graphic designer in a small print shop (4 employees: me, the printer, the boss and his wife + sometimes an helper to fold/staple sheets), and I'm a weekend amateur photographer. I really like my job, though I haven't really tested my newfound and still growing photography knowledge in this domain yet. We deal mostly with small things: business cards, invoices, enveloppes, golf tournaments tickets... most are recurring jobs, so I just pop in the backup CD and print out the plate.
I always liked photography but couldn't really afford a good camera (other priorities in life). Bought my S2 in January this year, my first camera with manual settings and I loooove it so far.

For the past 10 months I've been a stay at home dad after 20 years in the IT industry. Would like to do photography as a full time job but I need something that will pay the bills, so I am studying to get back into an IT hands on contracting role (was a manager last 7 years) but being 46 yo age seems to be a bit of a hurdle.

Holy crap, I'd be the walking dead with that little sleep. :)
Put the kids to bed around 8, in bed myself by 10 normally, get up around 6. I get my 8 hours and I need them. With the 5 or so hours you get I'd be unbelievable grouchy. I mean I'd probably be deliberately trying to take photos of people just as they were eating.
Anyway, on a separate note I just got a $250 bonus as a result of the photography I have been doing at work. I was well pleased. :)

it has been interesting reading for me so far. thanks for your 'inputs' (is that a word?)
ok, so about me. I studied Human Biology at Uni, then got a job in IT.
How did that work? Not sure, but it seems IT was the boom industry just after I left Uni. so I 'slipped' into that role quite easily. I am supporting a rather large internation MS Exchange/AD installation just now with servers in countries with such bad bandwidth problems, that it makes the job quite tiresome at times....
Photography is a hobby that I have been into for about 3 years. Historically I have never liked taking photos or looking at them in galleries. I was more into sculptures and painting at the local galleries, so I have no idea why photography has grown on me so much of late....
Sometimes i feel as though i spend more time in Photoshop these days than taking photos : ) well, it can take a few seconds to take a photo, but then I can sit with that photo for a good 10 minutes or so editing it : ) Does that make me a photographer or a Photoshop addict? Perhaps it means my 'in camera' shots are just so bad that they 'need' the additional PS work! :P
I think it is interesting to see more people on this forum polled for 'IT worker' than 'photographer' as a profession. I am still thinking about this. Perhaps the majority of 'photographers' spend less time in forums? no idea. just an assumption....

I migrated to Asheville from upstate NY...I involuntarily retired from my job with a large government entity as the result of breaking my back in 3 places. I've worked in computer hardware and software, and now work as Software Quality Assurance testing functionality of software developed in house or bought off the shelf before it is rolled out to approx 1000 in house clients.
I'm in QA too! We do retail planning software (pretty boring, but a paycheck that supports my travel and photography! :))

am I really the only artist here.?...wow. I do murals ( a lot of baby rooms) and faux finishes. I do some custom peices for people. Mostly fun stuff for kids rooms. I haven't actually done any 'real' portraits in a looooong time. I got into photography thinking it was just another creative outlet. I seem to spend more time in photoshop now than actually painting, sketching or drawing!

This is the County, Orange, it can be a crowded place with several theme parks and families from all over the world
And I get to be one of those visitors later this year.

Professor of Chemistry. I have a PhD in Physiological Biochemistry from Columbia. I have always liked to take photos, but I am not sure if I would want to be a professional photographer. It would be too much like a job then and I really would rather play than work.

Hi - Just back from an Alaska cruise - we (my Digital Rebel XT) and I had a great time!! Will post some as soon as I figure out how - and how to compress - and not be too ashamed. My County is the Orange in Florida (there are several and two of them have Disneys - quite confusing)...and for awhile it did seem like it should be a stationhouse rather than POTN. Thanks again for all the info that is posted here - so much of it came in handy in the "wilds of Alaska"...or the planned excursions off the cruise ship - whichever sounds more exciting!!! SNAP SAFE, Tim.

Friendswood -- I left Friendswood in 2001 during the tropical storm that looped around the area twice, leaving the whole area underwater. Spent two days in a hotel by the airport with no power trying to get my wife and kids on a plane. Can't say that I miss that part of Texas life. . . ;)
I was able to get some neat 'gator and bird pics in the area. I'd love to be able to do that again with the gear I have now, compared to the gear I had then.

What's the difference between a Mech Eng and a Civ Eng?
Mech Engineers design weapons. Civ Engineers design targets. I think you have to be an engineer to appreciate this one.

I run a boring machine - as in boring holes through the earth, Vermeer calls it a Horizontal Directional Drill to be fancy. Here is thier link (http://www.vermeer.com/vcom/TrenchlessEquipment/Line.jsp?PrdlnID=3383), not many people have heard of this that i have talked to. Basically we go in where trenching is not an option, like under freeways and busy streets.
